I agree, I have had two 40D's and still have one, I can't quite bring myself to sell it because it's worth so little but is just so good.
I certainly prefer the 40D's to a 50D I had. Didn't like that at all.
Picked up a used good condition 50D late last year mostly to test my workflow/PP/computing power with the larger file sizes. I've found that even my older comp's are holding up well. Other then the higher res LCD I as well am not super impressed with the 50D either, the loss of C3 I could live with but...they share grips/batteries so it wasn't a loss to give it a go. I'm still using it as my backup body, will sell it this year as it gets little use, the 40D has some magic in it's sensor; a sweet spot in Canon's lineup as Jim mentioned, I really like the files and it's IQ.
No doubt the 40D will remain, it was my 1st digital body, have kept my 1st SLR body as well, still use the old A-1 on occasion as memories are strong and it's a joy to shoot with...even back in 1978 Canon hit my sweet spot
Rational for getting the 6D is simple, 90% plus of my shooting is non-action and for now the 6.5fps of the 40D can handle the little action I do shot; it's center point works just fine, has for 6yrs. Next year I'll grab a 1D body if this changes, not going with the 5D3 affords me some missing L glass, lightens the weight factor as I rebuild this weak body and with it's changeable focusing screens lets me use some older nFD macro lenses that I can't seem to part with. Canon's 6D in hand feels great, can't wait to shoot with one and the 24-105 and try out WiFi with a tablet.
I have shot the 1D3, 1D4 and the 7D across an entire season of D-league NBA with our local team.
The 1D4, obviously, is the best of all 3, it does everything very well. When it comes to the 1D3 and 7D, I found them to be quite close in performance, both in AF tracking, noise-management, etc. The 1D3 retains a bit more detail, but then again, resizing up to match the 7D resolution, it gets a bit softer.
The 7D is a great camera, and if your budget only allows for it, you should do great. If your budget covers either the 7D or 1D3, then the only question I have is whether the 10mpx resolution is going to be enough for you, especially considering if you have to crop. It is a nice thing to have 2 similar bodies sharing the same batteries.
