As someone once said... it's the only true medium. And as I have found, parents don't like black and white UNTIL they see it on their kid. Then... that's all they want.

I use B&W when I want to save a pic that's improperly exposed or out of focus...so my first instinct when I see other people's is to look for the flaws that made a colorful pic unusable.

Thanks for the input. I'm still working on getting my color photos right. But I enjoy seeing these because it makes me think differently. Like one of the earlier posters said about MMA and Boxing, the B&W really brings out the grittyness. I did enjoy the close-ups. They drew me in, more so than I think they would have in color.

That is so true, and it's the reason i try to always include at least 1 B&W shot in the set of pictures i show the parents on the iPad of the previous game. It is a good 30% of all the pictures i sell. I also get many reprints order of B&W for the grand parents. They certainly seem to enjoy the vintage feel of things.

I for one will admit (already did in fact) that sometimes it is the reason why i change the shot into black n white but then again sometimes i do envision the shot in black in white to start with. You do have a point though being a photographer i will, when looking at a black n white shot unconsciously be looking for the reason why it was done in B&W. This won't happen to me when i admire a nice B&W landscape for instance.

To add to jspytek, comment i just remembered i used a spot color process a few times last year. Once for our local sports columnist here who was doing a bit on referees ( i have a lot of respect for the refs by the way, what an ungrateful job they do, much like my line of work) and another one simply to announce the beginning of the playoffs in my son's league. None were art gallery material i suppose but they did the job they were suppose to do.

Thank you very much sml, i am new here but i think i am as passionate about sports shooting as anybody else. I don't know if i will be accepted by you fellow sport shooters here but i'll try to fit in as best i can. I like posting some of my work like everybody, but i mostly want to learn and get better at my craft and i often start such discussions to really get some interesting inputs and other points of view than my own little perspective on things. As i had expected before joining here, everything here is "bigger" the quality to start with, the vast number of different sports and the sheer volume of posts. So i should learn volumes in no time at all.

As this post is slowly dying off, i just want to say thank you for the 600 + people who came and visit and also thank everyone who replied as well as Paul Alesse who contributed with simply awesome shots.
Like it or hate it B&W in sports shooting becomes an issue sooner or later, wether id be a matter of taste or an alternative to a color shot that just didn't come out right.

Wow! I can just imagine those shots in a nice frame hanging in the houses of your subjects. #3 my personal favorite followed closely by #5. Who says you can't relay action in a B&W shot ? I can almost hear the "thud" of the ball hitting the glove.

I totally agree with using B&W in sports. I shoot alot of drag racing and try and include some B&W from each event. In most cases its just something a little different - and thats what keeps people interested!

That's certainly true for motor sports shooting. If there's a domain where timeless black n white pictures are appropriate it's certainly in car shots, especially old models, IMHO.
