Well, you were not hired to shoot this wedding and you worked it for free anyway? (You were a guest, I presume). You were not the "official photographer" and yet you came back with over 500 pictures? You did not get paid and yet you gave them 300 pics on a disc for free? You are not a wedding pro and yet you had off camera lighting and an umbrella in the car and you were disappointed that you could not use it? You carried a backup camera and extra batteries and cards, like a pro would do. You got church pictures, outdoor pictures and reception pictures. Does anyone else see the irony in a guest doing this?...Show more →
sorry, I don't see the "irony".
Do you think it's wrong to work for free even though I was a guest and uncle to the bride ?
They would not have hired a professional even if I was not attending. I didn't have a backup camera but other guests had cameras. The ceremony was outside at a local resort, not in a church. Yes, I was disappointed I couldn't use Yongnuo flash and RF-602 triggers because I thought the lighting would be better off-camera.
I primarily used a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens
.
So if there's anything ironic in there I'm just missing it
Anyway, thx for the comments !
CW100, I'm a blood boiler when it comes to uncle bobs, but you know what? Good for you for saying "screw you" to people like me . Although I'm not sure you constituted an Uncle Bob since there was no hired pro present. The industry cannot make a bride who doesn't care about photos.....care about photos. So in the grand scheme of things, there's nothing to philosophize about here and I applaud your efforts. Your shots are nice for someone who's never done it.....so good job. The bride is fantastically pretty so the reality stands you could actually book real jobs with these photos because in the real world, it's more common for brides to judge photography based on what's in the photos you're showing, not the actual photo themselves. Had you screwed the photo up that'd be different. If you do end up going after paid work, then it's time to get some real advice from seasoned pros. Glad you had a fun day.
Bride is beautiful! Not everyone can afford a professional photographer and I'm sure these folks were very happy with you did for them. Images actually look quite good. You're not a Bobby for helping out a friend, Bob is the idiot who shows up with his full rig and gets in the way all afternoon ruining the couples professional photos instead of attending the wedding as a guest...
For example, here is a hard core Uncle Bob at the Baptism I shot last Sunday...
