Frogfish, in the manual for the 300mm f/2.8 VRII it states the following:
• Vibration reduction does not function when the AF-ON button on the camera or a focus operation button on the lens is pressed.
I was reading the manual on my 500mm lens and noticed this very same statement. Am I reading this correctly that you must use shutter for focus in order for the VR to work?

Can anyone shed some light on this .
Thanks,

Hey Birdie! Your 500 lens manual was written BEFORE the release of the new kids onna block...
D4/D800/D600/D7100. They ALL now activate VR from the AF-ON (AE-L/AF-L) button. your
D7K only activated VR with a shutter 1/2 depress and if you're like me, got used to this
way of doing business...same way with my tried 'n true D3/D700/D2Xs etc. Wish Nikon
would make a switchable option via firmware, this old dog hates learnin' new tricks.
okafoja wroteMy D800 AF was crap before the firmware update. So make sure you have all lenses tuned and that your D800 has the latest firmware update. Once you get it right the AF is incredible. My 5DIII has taken a back seat since I got my D800 going. That's says a lot because AF on 5DIII is first class.
Thanks mate - that's great to hear !
Firmware is up to date but 300 not yet tuned (I use FoCal).
UPDATE
None of the suggested changes worked today as far as getting the D800 to work properly with the 300 (again however the D600 was brilliant and the 300 AF incredibly fast and locked on instantly). I'm off on a short trip tomorrow but will drop the D800 off at Nikon for a check next week.
