Now, that is the spirit! I like your thinking.
Spirit or insanity. Gotta laugh at the lengths one goes for photography.
I'm reminiscing many a hike (Upto 10 miles) I took with my little buddy (see the avatar) on a retractable leash when she was still with me. On one shoulder was the 800L w/camera on the other was the Nikkor 200-400 w/camera and a bag with some short length alt lenses, an IR modded camera for scenic, macro and IR shots) a water bottle full of water for the dog, food for her, and a tripod. It was always a lot of fun enjoying the frest air, the beautiful vistas , birds and wildlife. Finding wildflowers or nice scenics on trail allowed for breaks. I know Nala always enjoyed it she was excited to see was beyond the next bend. The hikes were usually all day. Get back to camp have dinner get ready for sunset, off to bed, next morning sunrise shots, breakfast and then load up again and hit another trail for a different hike. Ah the good ole days.
I got a call from "my" camera store today. They said they were getting three 200-400Ls, two had been spoken for already, and they thought that I might have been interested in the remaining one. So I ordered it.
Now I have to go from one to another family member of mine, with a hat in my hand, begging for contributions towards the lens purchase cost.
I am also hoping that I will be able to sell my 200-400L evaluation report on line, as that would also help mitigate the $$ blow of the purchase.

I love how you rage against the machine for weeks, even months before lens ships about price, weight etc, then quietly announce you have ordered one.

Pixie, I do not "rage".....you seem to be projecting your own emotional state onto others.
Besides, it's my birthday......could be my last one too.
Peter, not a better bit of gear for your B-Day, do enjoy both when they arrive and may many more shots and B-Days be your future. Only the bestest, happest of days to you Telemeister

You just have to keep up with the Jones
I should never have told you my plans, if I recall the same thing happened with the 800 first you had no interest until I got it.
No matter I look forward to your review, and here's a novel idea Jim would like you sell him the 200-400 and I would sell him the 800 and he should be all set.
I have wanted and waited for this lens for sooooo many years. Too bad I will not be ordering it. That price is outrageous, I don't care how some may justify it. Of course, if a person has the money and wants it, no justification is necessary. But for me, I just can't do that price. I'd rather buy one of the new 500 or 600 primes for approx the same money and wait for the rumored 100-400 replacement. Until then, it's 70-200 with 1.4x to take care of the intermediate stuff. I think the lens, however, will be stellar in its performance, but not enough to justify that price...not for me anyway. If making a special trip, perhaps renting would be an option.

Robert, you and Roland are my role models.
I understand Jim has been eyeing your 800 for some time now.
I think I know what his plan might be now: trade my 200-400L, which he hopes to receive into his custody, for your 800.

I'll never say never, but it's incredibly unlikely I'd buy one of these, and it would be a several years down the track. Personally more interested in a new 100-400L mk II or a superior 150-500 from Sigma.
For me me a zoom is about convenience and portability, and I don't see the that in a 3.6kg lens that's bigger than a 500 f/4 even ignoring the cost.
I see it pretty much the same way. You once proposed a 4:1 zoom along the lines of a 125-500, and I'd still be interested if Canon used a push-pull design similar to the 100-400 (for compact storage) and got IQ and AF improvements in line with their recent redesigns. An f/4 long FL zoom like the 200-400 is great, but not so great for hand-holding, hiking, and funding.

One never knows which will be the last. And with that happy thought I wish you the best!
Peter, any word from your dealer on ship date? Looks like your advice to FMers to practice restraint when it comes to purchasing this lens was just a little self-serving
