Ok, after much discussion and review of models everyone recommended here, the happy parents to be decided they definitely want interchangeable lenses. So Rebel or D5200 from Nikon probably be a good choice then. Rebel T3i or T4i which looks pretty good price to me. I'll have to do some more research on these rebels and the Nikon model. I imagine they'll want the ease of a zoom lens. Thanks again for the wonderful input.
Why not trying the Oly EP5, it seems to have a pretty good spec sheet and same sensor as the OMD.
On the Canon front I would go for the Canon SL1 with the kit lens. This will give them size and access to all lens available. Who knows, they might like photography and get to upgrade further into Canon.
The NEX 6 is a very good choice too with Focus peaking and continuous AF during video, besides...it takes pictures too
