I have been trying out Capture One Pro 7 and the lighter version "Express" and I really like them. It appears to me that I am getting better results than with CS6, and much easier to work with also. I'll still use CS6 because of all the filter plug-ins I have, but I could live without them. Bye, bye Adobe.

Microsoft is experimenting with this format with their Office suite. Intuit, which has the monopoly on Accounting software (Quickbooks), has been rumored to be thinking about it, too. Now that Adobe has played their cards, I wouldn't be surprised to see the software monopoly players try their hands as well.

Like Corel, Microsoft is pretty much on the record as saying it will keep a dual system (subscription and perpetual licenses) for the foreseeable future. I would not be surprised to see software vendors with majority corporate clients switch to an all-subscription model (as Salesforce has done, for example) because corporate clients often generally prefer this model.

Adobe should IMO do exaclty what Microsoft is doing -- offer both CS and CC versions for the time being and see how the market reacts instead of simply pulling the plug so suddenly on CS. Adobe has about a half million CC subscribers but well over ten times that number of non-CC customers. Quite what made them decide to urinate all over the majority of their customers is beyond me.

I think that the small guys are going to abandon ship in droves, myself included.

Time to be content with what I have.

How much better do we need PS to get anyway? What can it not do for you?

This is the crux of the matter, and Adobe knows it: all of their programs -- Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc. -- are mature products, and there aren't any new features on the horizon that would compel perpetual license owners to upgrade. What to do? Force customers to cough up money on a regular basis, regardless of any future enhancements to the software.

It's a good thing they're too big to fail!

Maybe they should ask Kodak how that worked out for them...

As of now, that will only work if you are using a Mac, otherwise that will be an expensive switch.

Am I correct in thinking that it is no longer possible to upgrade CS5 to CS6 other than subscribing to CC?

Just like iTunes, Safari and other products from Apple, it can be ported to Windows based PCs. This is a huge opportunity for Apple. If in fact LR becomes lease only I will switch to Aperture (fortunately I have Apple computer). But without PS it'll be a bit hard. I can hold on to CS6 for a long time though.

A key business tenet is market segmentation. I think they have made progress here. The needs of professionals, teams, businesses are being met by CC. Rather than a large up front cost and annual/biannual large payments, Adobe is asking for constant and smaller payment.

The loser is the hobby / amateur, especially those of us who already own a license and don't see the need to get other CC programs. I would like to see Adobe offer a photography license for those of us who have CSx through CS6 (lower cost for CS6 owners) which includes LR and PS. Fees could run from $15/month for CS6 owners upto $25/month for CS2 or CS3 owners.

I don't know ... I think much can be done to make Photoshop's capabilities much more accessible to photographers ... or just create a product (or evolve LR) for photographers. I think the Photoshop era may be topping out ... but, I do not think it is an example of an optimum product for photographers. Advanced Photoshop users, like myself, can apply many complex approaches to process our images, but we know there must be a better more accessible approach. Experience tells me that ten years from now Photoshop CS6 will seem like a cumbersome and outdated product to photographers.

Scott Kelby tries to explain. Looks very nervous. Comes up with the idea of neutering Photoshop as a solution. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=N8HrvJdxla8&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DN8HrvJdxla8%26feature%3Dyoutu.be

Haha... Adobe's not even close to the size Kodak was in terms of market cap or revenues ($4.4B in revenues vs. $16B peak at Kodak), so watch out indeed

Come to think of it, Adobe would make a nice snack for the likes of Google, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon or any number of other companies looking to boost their software business. Food for thought

If you guys have an idea for the right solution on this matter, you should consider telling John Nack from Adobe about your thoughts. Yes, he is asking for your feedback.

Talk to Adobe's John Nack

I have been following John Nack's blog for years and I think he is pretty cool guy. Try to remember that he might not think that the subscription model is the best thing either. He is not CEO and probably can't speak freely on his mind. At least he want to hear about your concerns.

@Lotuselite: You can still upgrade from CS5 to CS6. Here's the link. I'm considering the update, and then hoping for a competitor in the next year or so that can import PSD files.

Thank you for the link Big Iron, I tried to find an option to upgrade on Adobe's site and kept ending up in pages about the Cloud.
I had seen some posts saying that the update option was no longer available and had about given up.

I'm hoping that by the time CS6 and LR5 are no longer viable there will be more options although I do have Aperture and the Nik plugins and if Apple have not put it on the back burner it may work well.
Thanks again.

I wonder what percentage of CS6 most photographers actually use...and if the programme was slimmed down to the basic core what would it look like? Something like LR4 probably...or something that other companies are either producing already or could with a little effort - particularly if they see a whole new market sector open up (disgruntled Adobe customers).

Taking this into account, and the upcoming activities of the pirates once a cloud version of Photoshop falls into their hands, and one would think Adobe would be trying to be nice to all its current customers....not alienating them!!
