Wouldnt it be cool to be able to do all your edits and then batch commit to sidecar after the work is done?
You can do that. Library view, select all, Command+S on Mac or Ctrl+S on PC. I don't do auto-xmps because that is slow but I can always go save the metadata quickly if I want to.
You know, if you were able to explain this in just the right way, this could be a good way to upsell albums to the crowd who "just wants the digital files"...

The directory system in LR is the most archaic mess of any program I have ever used. You constantly have to hop all over the screen, in and out of directories to accomplish the most simple tasks. Utter rubbish. If you ever decide to relocate or or re-organize your base files , good luck.
Or Heaven forbid, delete a file and then try to find it or reimport it...
Last year we started a new LR workflow and we create a new catalog for each wedding and event we shoot. Each event is tagged with a date so we can search for it but we were noticing a slow down in LR performance and coupled with our general fear of losing a catalog/library with 10's of thousands of photos, we decided to changed our process. Not only is there an increase in LR speed but if one catalog is corrupted/fails, that's the only event we've lost.
I've been using LR since 2007; and I have always used one catalog per client... which equates to a HUGE number of catalogs. I've never lost a catalog or had a problem with one. Thus, the reason I find it extremely hard for a failing HDD to selectively choose only LR catalogs to corrupt or destroy. There's something simple here the OP is missing. Maybe even a naming or extension issue. I'm betting Adobe can tell him how to fix it.
