p.2 #1 · Advice please - choosing best camera option

While I hate the 7D for noise... noise is better then out of focus which is what the 5D2 will get you in that environment even with the centre point (have not used the 6D but expect it's closer to the 5d2 then the 7d from the focus point of view... seems to be what I see online).

I would opt for one of the 1-series in this case, even if you have to go back to one of the 1D2mkII's which would get you more $ for lenses. The 24-105 is a good solid lens (I'm in the camp that likes it on both FF and crop) and might be workable although you might be better off with a faster option like an 85f1.8 or 100f2.8 or even 135f2 depending how far your having to crop when not using the 300.

Hi All,

Looking for some advice on what would be the best option for an upgrade.

Probably like most people here it seems like every couple of years I feel the need to upgrade due to issues I discover. E.g. went from the 1000d to the 40d due to wanting better AF and FPS. Now having started going to ice hockey I’m stuck at ISO 3200 which is (for my uses) ok even for print, but it would be nice to have the benefit of new sensors to make this or slightly higher not feel like a compromise and allow faster

5diii and 70-200 f2.8 is my recommendation. See if you can pick up a v1 of 70-200 f2.8. With 5diii you will get a stop or two performance gain over 7d/40d in iso, however you will lose some reach. f2.8 and more reach plus 5diii is the best solution for what you describe. You can probably pick up a v1 of 70-200 for $1300 given the v2 is out. The v2 is better but I don't think you will notice it in sports.

I don't think that the 24-105 is a great camera for indoors of fast action. It is a great lens for outdoors/landscape though.

Thanks Rob. I'm after a general walk around lens so I'm pretty sure the 24-105 or even the 17-40 (on 1.3) will be a good choice over a prime at present. They'd give me a pretty good range being covered. Will start looking at the 1d iii and iv to see how they are looking price wise.

Thanks Scott. I've got the 70-200 F4 which will be staying a while. If I can get 1 more stop (or even better a few) in ISO then I can stick with my current lenses and maybe pick up a 1.4x to get my reach back with the 300. Good to hear you say that about the 24-105 for landscape as that will be its main use with a 50 f1.8 for low light (might look at a 30mm ish prime as well).

Perhaps on another trip over to the US I may get the f2.8 if my sport photos ever start to get a decent priority in shooting time.

Saving is currently going pretty well so my sinking feeling of the 5diii needing to be written off or next year are looking unfounded.

Just wanted to come back to this as I've been thinking about it some more, and with still a few months to go I'm sure I'll end up with a pretty solid decision.

I've decided the 5d3 isn't the way to go. While I said money was no object as I will save, what's the point in having a top camera and no money to go places!

I think it'll end up being a 5d2/1d3 or 6d along with a 70-200/2.8 to stick on my 40d for sports and get that extra stop so i can use 1600 instead of 3200 if i need to.

Hi Again,

I've the chance to buy a new 7d with warranty for the equivalent of between $1,021.26 - $1,055.46 which seems to be better than the price over in the US.

I'm very very tempted for the crop-ability of the extra pixels.

I think that if you bought a 7D now, you'd be kicking yourself. The 7D is the camera to get for focal-length limited action, but a 6D will outperform it everywhere else.

The 70D has the 7D's AF, a few more megapixels, and possibly better image quality which is sorely needed. If you're willing to shoot crop, the 70D is likely your camera in the near future; if not, the 6D is superior to the 5D II in too many ways to consider the older camera (myself being in a similar position and going with the 6D from a 60D).

My .02 is that the 1D3 would work great for hockey. Fast focus and fps and a crop factor to help you get a bit further with your lens. (I know crop factor vs. cropping a higher mp ff is relevant but when I get into those thread discussions my eyes spin in different directions.)

The 1Ds3 is also an amazing camera. I sometimes kick myself having sold mine.

Thanks John, David,

I'm thinking for the money I'll be spending on it I'll probably feel more comfortable buying new which limits me to the 6, 7 or 70d.

There is no one camera that will do everything i want (in my price range) so it's a very tough call.

So tempting. I've been leaning to holding off and getting a 1d3, despite the lack of reach/pixels until I started investigating the IS issue that's going on with my 300mm. It's got to be something to do with the camera, but at least if anything like that pops up with a new one it won't be me shelling out to fix it.
