The out of camera video is slightly sharper now with the 1.2.1 firmware. Before a scene that I could sharpen @ + 50 with PPro now I see some moire @ + 35 sharpen.
Will need to shoot some more tests; I'm hoping that it's still moire-free if you leave in-camera sharpness @ 0. Might just have to only go to +20 sharpen now in post.
Have you compared final detail yet. Does +20 new firmware give more detail than +50 with the old firmware? (hopefully, otherwise we might get no real detail increase but aliasing increase)

It's starting to make me realize the internal codec on the 5D3 (not talking about video quality etc. just the compression regardless of anything else) is insanely good for a real-time compressor. Whatever people say about this or that with the 5D3 video, I don't think it was down to the compressor and all the talk about how if only they had used the C-series or some other compressor seems to be off the mark perhaps.
I was so used to thinking in terms of the 5D2 compressor bu the 5D3 one has nothing to do with that at all. Most other cameras hooked to external recorders seem to have a more easily noticeable jump.
Both taken with internal recording and same settings.
The biggest difference might be the output in general, not comparing internal vs external (where, at least for static stuff without high-frequency color details, the difference seems to be near nil).
Maybe it does grab more details and not mush details in shadows as much now.
So maybe might initial feeling that is was more detailed really was correct (keep going back and forth)
Of course tests are tricky, a slight change in focus or a bad frame selection can toss the results, but assuming his shot tells the tale I guess I was correct in my first feeling that wow it did get a bit crisper. I later deleted that post, but I guess I had been right on my initial take after all.
(I do wonder about some of the very odd artifacts that I seem to see at times now though, a few seemed a little nasty an done was very bizarre. Slight bumps to camera made leaves and sticks on ground dance and crawl in a sorta weird way that I don't happened with the old firmware.)

The image you linked has been consistant with what I've seen from similar tests. By that I mean the details are ever so slightly crisper in the shadows and highlights. It really is so minimal though, and not enough to make me want to go buy an external recorder. It's interesting to gauge the reaction of the Atomos guys at NAB this year who were touting this feature as a "game changer" for the mark III. Their enthusiasm aside, I just don't see it.

I thought that dropbox link was comparing the internal 1.1.3 vs. the 1.2.1 ?
It is. It's not an internal vs external recording thing it is a 1.1.3 vs 1.2.1 thing.
Internal vs external on 1.2.1 I don't really see any difference like that at all, it looks the same sharpness, at least for static stuff without high frequency color details certainly. I didn't test fine red details or edges yet. External might help for that.
