If you look at that sample image on a screen that handles correctly, it should be just four smooth toneramps. But the image viewer must handle sRGB correctly, and the screen must have all "sharpening" and so on turned off.
If the brightness curves are off, it will be visible as a stripe in the middle of the wedge.
