Awesome! Is this just direct from camera jpg or did you use a raw converter such as Lightroom 4 or NX2? I find Phase One Capture 7 64bit to extract more detail from either converters, even better from Phase One Capture 6. I should post here with a comparo between PO6 and PO7 64bit with a D3X file.
Some random images taken from El Nido, Palawan, Philippines. These are all converted in Phase One Capture 7 64 bit. Compared to Phase One Capture 6, it's a step up in it's raw engine processing. It forks out more detail in the D800 and the D3X and images look more life-like. Images below have no adjustments, no cropping. Cheers.
I find NX2 saturates the Reds on the high side and shadows are deeper compared to Phase One Capture 6 or 7. With Phase One, it digs deep into the shadows and produces more natural looking colours, so I stopped using NX2 for the D3X/D800 files.
Awesome shots with the D3x. I'm not inclined to spend that much for a camera, nor would I be seeking a pro body, but I really didn't like holding the D800 after three years with a D700, so it holds NO appeal to me. But these images are really impressive. Best of all, you seem to be happy with your purchase. Congratulations!

Wow, I like the owl.
For me the D3x is, apart from a slight worry the iso performance, the best combination of features for allround usage (pro body, battery, waterproofness and IQ)! The D800 sure has more pixels but that's not all that counts.
