If people are stupid enough to pay $5500 for this camera, then it's smart for Leica to sell it for that price.

Uncle Mike,

what alternative camera can I buy? My requirements are a new camera, full frame 35mm sensor, native Leica M mount and a coupled rangefinder.

honestly it sounds like you are super bitter that some people can spend $5500 on a camera that you don't understand. I wonder what the proportion of people who can spend $5500 on a camera is below the 50th percentile of intelligence? Id venture it's significantly less than half.

I would rather let this thread die in peace than more drama add in.
That/Bashing is good thing for Leica, The more bashing, the more people get curious about Leica and want to try that what is the fussy about it

Bashing Leica is one thing, but calling us Leica owners stupid is very insulting.

I really don't get it. What the fuck is anyone's business how and what I spend my own money on.

Its not unless you live in socialistic country (most within EU). Maybe in US (thats going there very fast).

Money is like any other possesion, just your choice what you do with that. I dont judge ppl buying drugs, neither ppl buying guns, so no judging of ppl buying Leica. I cant see how camera choice could define us.

It was always a poseur's camera, why's now the time to get upset?

Fully agreed Mescalamba. Funny but true.

On the other hand, people in Asia seem to have a different attitude regarding money spending. They seem to love buying what is perceived as luxury items and do not look at it in a negative way or criticize it as we do in the west.

I really hope we're not comparing gun ownership to Leica ownership. I'm afraid I'd have to strongly disagree there ;-)

And its even bad in being a poseur's camera. In all those years of using the M8 and M9 only 2 people really recognized it, and those were photographers who wanted to see and ask about it.

Further, https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/920070
659 pages of reasons why not to take that DxO test all to seriously.

Blimey, some people really do let internet comments upset them.

Wanna buy Leica and have the money, great and lucky you. Don't wanna buy Leica because you a) don't have the money, b) don't think they're worth the money, c) don't think they're worth it because you don't have the money, d) don't think they would suit your style of photography, e) think that Leica are overpricing their gear, then that's fine and your free choice to make.

Me, I don't have the money but would love to own a Leica. Would it be a sensible or even practical purchase for me, I doubt it, but I still want one. I have and still do consider trading some of my Nikon gear, which is considerably more capable in probably every scenario possible, to fund one. It would be a purely indulgent purchase made with my heart and not my head.

Doesn't make me stupid, in my opinion, but then so what if some of you think this is a stupid thing to do. I don't mind if you think I am stupid, or even if you say I am on a public forum. I'm me, and I'll do my thing, rightly or wrongly.

Did I mention I want a Leica M?

This was a fun and cool thread until the top of this page. Different people with different opinions putting an argument forward. I certainly didn't expect to change anyone's mind, although it doesn't stop me trying.

So if you've got something interesting, intellegent os simply funny to say, go ahead. But comments that are an attack say more about the commentor than the intennded victims, IMHO.

I just got home from todays wedding. 2 M9's (thats why I'm twice as defensive as most) and two E-M5's. Cameras not up to the task, nil. Cameras fun to use, four. Photos from four cameras, 1286. For the first time I actually too nearly identical shots with the $4K 135mm APO telyt and $900 75mm 1.8. Should be an interesting comparison. Had a journalist student ask us about our choices in gear. She thought the 1Ds3 and 70-200 (my shooting partners) was awesome and said how beautiful the M9 was to hold and how she just wanted to fondle it. Hard to argue with that.

Uncle Mike, monkeycolonel: That's just not cool. I'm no Leica fan as regular posters here can attest, but whatever issue you have with Leica and/or its pricing does not make Leica users stupid or poseurs.

Several of the absolute best photographers here in the Alt forum are Leica shooters, a couple of them are even posting here in this thread.

Would I buy an M-E? Hell no. I think the value proposition is lousy, I prefer my Sony & Olympus colour and I have a strong liking for Live View so the M-E strikes out hard for me. The M Type 240 was interesting until I saw how LV was crippled. But I'll probably look hard at the Type 240's successor if it has a full LV implementation (and I expect it to) as I've pretty much settled that my NEX kit will be M-based aside from the Zeiss 24 and maybe a wide (I'm debating between the 16+0.75x adapter or a CV 15/4.5). But even then I'll probably be comparing against an FF NEX. In both cases all the frills will be irrelevant, when I want those I grab my m4/3 kit.

For some people buying equipment is all they have, so trying to rationalise every purchase is essential to them. I personally enjoy photography, creating photographs. Yes I like and dislike parts of what I use to make photographs, but its not the be all and end all. But Y'know, this is an equipment forum, so you have to take it in context...

I dont understand why you continue to post in this section Snowboarder.

I've not seen you post any pictures and your form of trolling is neither original or extreme enough to be interesting.

just as a general rule maybe the people who don't shoot Leica and don't have specific questions about purchasing one should keep it to themselves? alternatively, everyone who owns a Leica could just threacrap some Canon/Nikon threads with posts about how stupid you must be for buying cameras with plastic on them? Why is it that the civilized options has been repeatedly demonstrated to be off the table?

This is a pretty unfair test since the D800 and 5D3 are so much newer and cheaper than the M9 (and Leica is pricing the M-E well below the M240, so I think it's fair to say they aren't pretending its a new camera).

We should compare the M9 to the Nikon D3s that was announced around the same time and costs a similar amount. Those results should be totally differ...what's that, they're not? Oops.
