From the same day, hiking around Chamarel, I got these with the Sammy:

Terre Sept Couleurs, Chamarel, again

http://homepage.hispeed.ch/krypton/m/tc5.JPG

Nikon D3 - Samyang 14mm 1:2.8 ED AS IF UMC
14mm, 1:8, 1/750, ISO 200, A, Matrix - 1

Rum tasting at the Chamarel rum destillery:

http://homepage.hispeed.ch/krypton/m/r1.JPG

Nikon D3 - Samyang 14mm 1:2.8 ED AS IF UMC
14mm, 1:16, 1/90, ISO 200, A, Matrix +/- 0

http://homepage.hispeed.ch/krypton/m/r2.JPG

Nikon D3 - Samyang 14mm 1:2.8 ED AS IF UMC
14mm, 1:8, 1/45, ISO 200, A, Matrix - 1/2

I know the last two are not very... they're no "good" pictures, more of a documentary style, terrible light - but the lens did well.

maybe they are just what comes out after tasting a half dozen different bottles of rum Clearly, focus was dead on, so the lens qualifies as a manual focus compatible with impaired operators.

I'm sure you could tweak that last one in camera raw and photoshop to make something out of it by brightening up the rum bottles and get some more color and light in the glass.

Yeah, I focussed correctly at f16

They were taken AFTER tasting every bottle in the picture. We HAD to...

Thank you for the comment.

Beautiful images! This lens is very tempting. I think I want it. I already have the Samyang 8mm and 85mm. Love them. Is this one the same optical quality?

I just moved up from DX to a D800e. I still like the 8mm in DX mode, but I need something wide for FX. A sharp rectilinear UWA would be fantastic. I see a few folks are shooting this on a D800. How well does it resolve the 36mp sensor? How's it look at 1:1?

I'm a bit confused about whether to chip or not. Would the chip confer any advantage on a D800? The 8 and 85 I have are both chipped.

it is better than the 8mm on DX (less chroma issues). The only thing I noticed is a slight green cast in the corner when it vignettes, but that's easily corrected. It is super sharp. I also have the 85mm and used to have the 8mm before going to DX.

Here's a 100% sized shot on the D600 so you can go pixel peeping

That's a great shot. I was admiring that one before.

Seems like the chip makes the lens full-auto minus the focus, of course. This is what I'm used to on the 8mm and the 85mm. And minus the chip on the d800, you would set aperture on the lens barrel, and the camera will choose shutter speed in A mode. Is that right? Any opinions on whether it's worth $70 extra for the chip? Does focus confirmation only work with the chip?

I don't use the chipped lens and don't think I am missing out on anything. Most of my lenses are manual focus anyway and I just dial in the non-CPU info for it before I shoot. I still have to set the aperture on the lens, but that's like on all the others and I am used to it. The exposure is either A mode or M, the only two modes I usually shoot in anyway. Focus confirmation works on all MF lenses without chip.

I paid $340 for my chipped version that was used maybe 3 times. I think new ones are $400? I like not having to remember the exif data Although it really doesn't matter in the end

When I finally got mine in early April, the new chipped lenses were $419, and the non-chipped $379, plus minus $30 depending on what brand name was written on the barrel.

I have all EXIF data except for "lens" but CS6 takes the focal length just fine. Not sure what you need that manufacturer lens data for.

hmm, interesting. I know that there are two versions, the old ones and the new "UMC" ones, which is what I have. I was reading up on the advantages of the chipped ones over the non-chipped ones, and looks like you can "fine tune" it..

here is a thread over at dpreview

Thanks everyone for the info. All is now clear. I went for it. There's one new unchipped copy left at Amazon for $312 but I sprang for a new chipped one from B&H. None of the several small advantages are all that important, but taken together I suppose they are worth the premium. Lens arrives next week...groovy. Crossing my fingers I get a good copy.

you can focus fine tune any lens once you have it in the non-CPU lens database. The value of the chip can be summarized in two things - you can set the aperture on a body wheel, and the EXIF will say 14mm Samyang lens somewhere in it, while my lens shows up as a 15mm focal length somewhere else in the EXIF (Nikon won't allow you to set a 14mm since they never made a 14mm manual, but so what)

here's the EXIF from a 14mm non-chipped lens minus all the camera raw stuff on a D600 after setting it up as a 15mm f/2.8 non-CPU lens

Here is one from yesterday. This falls is Little Niagra Falls. Easy to get to, but located deep in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
