We've just hit California after 8 days in Hawaii - 4 in Maui (Haleakala National Park - amazing!!), and 4 days on the Big Island. Our big splurge for this trip was the Lava Boat Tour at Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island (our 49th USA National Park!). Starting at 5am, the tour is timed to get you right up close just at the right time, and you get to within about 20 feet of the action - boy, was it hot!...it was an awesome (I don't use that word very often!) experience, and worth everyone one of the many dollars it cost. Even the 45 minute boat trip each way in the wild seas was a huge adventure, and when we got to the freely running lava show, the boat captain gave us heaps of time, from all angles, to shoot the show. I can't recommend this trip enough. And all the time the light just got better and better. This is going to take some beating........and I have heaps of images to work through. Very hard conditions to shoot in, off a wildly rocking boat, but managed to get a lot of great images - all I can say is "WOW!"
cheers Andrew
Andrew I think you take the best images of our national parks. This is great! And not overpowering with the lava. Plus, I'm kind of slow, so I had to look up the spelling, thinking "Andrew wouldn't make a mistake!" Which of course you didn't...
Hey Jim, its $175 each...absolutely worth it! So if you can sleep in the car for 3 nights, that would just about cover it!
Thanks for all the positive comments...great to share such an exciting experience.
cheers Andrew
Very cool vantage point, and amazing shot, Andrew. Would definitely like to do this my next time over there. What service did you use? Some run at sunset, and some have gotten bad press.
