Personally, I prefer the first image. You still get the camaraderie of the players, but the intensity of the guys stare seems bigger or more dire in the first.

The crop, processing, and the blur really bring the viewer into the image. Sometimes less is more and that seems to be the case in these two images. Real nice work.
#1 for me - makes you feel you're facing off with them (not that I'd want to, actually.) The toning works for me in these images whereas I was less enthusiastic about it in your other post. Great sports images both.
If I may offer a broad thanks to everyone for their time, insight, and comments - interesting the splits in preferences. Personally, I tend slightly toward #1 but will explore both for printing.
And props to Lazlo - for the inspiration for the processing and things just sort of fell into place for this image. But still a long way to go.
Back-story: the team was gathering their composure after losing a closely contested match...locking up for a scrum was not quite as relaxed. After some dry clothes, I am sure they all revisited the match over some cold beverages at a local pub.
The image is incredibly good, Bob.
It captures the violent nature of rugby perfectly. Why they don't punch each other out all the time is amazing. Semi-civilized behavior in a Neanderthal- based "sport?" Quite a concept .
I also prefer the crop because it emphasizes the intensity of the one man's stare.
Charlie
Charlie misses the point, sadly, as rugby is a game for ruffians played by gentlemen.
Soccer is a game for gentlemen played by ruffians. American football ? Definitely not Neanderthal as they were intelligent, gentle and civilized . Probably Cro Magnon as in Flintstone.
