p.5 #1 · Being asked to shoot a wedding when you aren't a wedding photographer

As I was skimming through this thread and reading several posts, I began to shake my head. What a lost opportunity to have a constructive discussion and possibly offer the OP some guidance about wedding photography.

I didn't honestly expect the thread to take the turn it did. I've posted a few of my images and have been met with nothing but respect and courtesy and everyone was incredibly helpful. More so then any other forum I've been a part of. I feel like I wandered into the bad part of a good neighborhood lol.

Go for it. Keep it simple. Get a backup body if you can. Most weddings I use nothing but a D700 and a 35mm.

p.5 #4 · Being asked to shoot a wedding when you aren't a wedding photographer

OP,

If you can, I would ask the wedding photographers in your local area if you can meet them for coffee and pick their brains about wedding photography. You could even ask to second shoot for them. You may get a lot of declines, as they may be to busy to help out others or simply not interested, but I would keep persisting.

If you decide to shoot the wedding anyway, I would get books on wedding photography and do your homework. That is, if you are really serious about it. This opportunity could be a one time thing where you may ultimately decide that it's not the business you want to get involved in. Luckily, I took advantage of the many opportunities to second shoot weddings last year before I decided that wedding photography in general, didn't really give me the thrill I normally get from doing other genres.

Good luck.

If I took this job, I would take it extremely seriously.

Do you have any recommendations on wedding photography resources?

When I get into school tomorrow, I will see if there are any wedding photographers looking for second shooters. They usually come looking for students to get decent shots for low cost.

You post this on ANY forum, I bet you the thread will end up the same. What do you expect?

I've been looking at your site, you do pretty well with just that. I was looking into buying a D600 in a couple weeks to break into FF. I'm curious how well that camera could handle a wedding.

Yeah, I now know this. You really think I would have asked this question if I thought this would be the outcome?

Also, I did post this in another forum, and while there were people telling me to not do it. It did not have a turn out like this at all lol. Not even close. Much more civil and diplomatic.

This forum has a lot of active working professionals. Most forums are full of amateurs. This the different response. I reacted harshly initially and them offered some solid advice, mm?

You did give me solid advice and I am grateful. I guess to get your advice I needed to get through the gauntlet

Yeah, I don't see any insults/aggressive posts or misconstrued points anywhere. Seems like you have a thing for confrontation and instigation Robin. Or let me guess, you didn't mean my thread had the same outcome.

I love this defensive thing lol. Member A makes an offensive remark, Member B responds. Member B is defensive lol.

I match the reply to the tone of the targeted post. Not the person. If your next remark was hey I really like your website, my response would be just as pleasant. That's how I do things.

Or do you expect to be an instigator, and me not reply at all? Is that what your intentions are when you say the things you do? Serious question.

Thanks. My wife also uses one, except she's got a 50mm and occasionally an 85mm. But you really don't need much. A D600 is more than enough. A D40 is more than enough. We only really use FF for the DOF control.

How do you go about picking shots? Do you do mostly PJ?

Exactly. If you give them a fair expectation and you meet or exceed it then they have nothing to complain about. I'd maybe try and get that in something like an email so you can have that proof if they do try to come back to you and give you grief.

ballistics... while this thread looks all over the place ...
a couple of thoughts:

A. as mentioned earlier.....there are a bunch of working pros (full time or as a 2nd job).
B. What makes this forum different: shooter care.... care about the industry, about the product....
C. You should treat this like walking into a back yard barbecue full of shooter as mentioned in A.

So how would you approach the backyard? Most likely listen at first then start sharing your thoughts/asking questions.

just my 2 cents.....
