Out for a walk with the Fuji X100 (Limited Edition). I've been really thinking about selling my XE-1, 35 1.4 and the X100 and just buying the X100s as my lone camera. But the Black X100 looks so good.. Wish they had made a black X100S,

I've debated the same thing from time to time. Your captures are beautiful btw.
Behind Lenin Square (then 9 January Square) stands Pavlov's House. During the battle of Stalingrad, the Germans had almost pushed the Russians back into the Volga. Sgt Pavlov and his men held the house behind this wall for 56 days under fire every day. General Chuikov later remarked that the Germans lost more men trying to capture this one house than they did taking Paris. It became a symbol of dogged resistance and the No Step Back order.
Yak-3 fighter by the Volga River
Outside the Panorama Museum that details the Battle of Stalingrad. A bit odd as the Yak-3 didn't fly until 2 years later but no matter, lovely aircraft anyway. This one is just a "gate guard" model though.

I've been watching the X100s prices and new ones are starting to show with some discounts and the used one's on the buy/sell here are looking like they will be below $1000 in the next month or so. Once the price breaks below $1000 I'll probably go with the X100s. For now I'll hang onto the X100.
Just a simple stone memorial to set against the massive triumphalism of the war museums and memorials - this stone remembers the tens of millions who were killed by other Russians in one of the most terrible State crimes in history.
Hi Ian,
Liking your shots..thanks for posting. Went out in my backyard and played around with the X100 mostly at F2. Really didn't do much to these and the I shot the B&W's in that mode. I need to get into Boston and do some street shooting one of these days.

Allstar: particularly like your second one with the splash of colour.

These are from the river port on the Volga. This concrete monstrosity was once the centre of the tourist industry as Russians were mostly forbidden from travelling abroad and so took long trips down the Volga.
The Volga is wider than this; what seems to be the far bank is just an island.

Hi Ian,
Is Russia as gloomy as these pictures make it seem? Looks fairly miserable.

Can't speak for Russia, but pre Berlin wall coming down, most of the East Block countries did feel as dreary as Ian's photos...
I think I was just drawn to the old Soviet spaces which are fairly run down after 25 years of neglect (actually more like 50 years of neglect!). But modern Russia is growing up amongst them, with an IMAX, modern shopping centres and Toyota dealerships. I just find those less interesting I guess.
One of the things that interested me was the juxtaposition of old Tsaritsyn, wartime Stalingrad and modern and Soviet Volgograd all in the same space.
I should add that I felt very safe there (in spite of the bus bombing in the town during my visit) and the people were friendly and easy going. But maybe that's because I'm a white foreigner. I did notice all the traders from the Caucasus had disappeared after the clashes in Moscow. For me though, people were friendly and welcoming as I've always experienced in Russia. It is a place I've always felt at home in, though I keep a wary eye out for the undoubted dark side that exists.
Anyway, here are a couple more ....
Old Soviet signs don't have brand names. Culture Base. There was only one.
