These are 100% crops. Focus is on the centre of the chewing gum box, around the 't'. Watch was just put there for reference.
Thanks Jojoman. Still no one is really answering my initial question though. Are my samples normal for this camera? Would you X100 and X100s users say your cameras produce equally soft images at f2.
Believe Ken Rockwell and you'd be fooled into thinking the X100 is 'tack sharp' at f2 and his samples would show that too. I quote... 'The fast f/2 lens, is unchanged from the X100 — because it is already perfect.'
Do I have a dodgy camera or am I getting standard results from this camera?...Show more →
can't really say if performance is normal since i don't have the camera, but things definitely look sharper further back on the box than the 't'. perhaps your camera doesn't have the most accurate focus? it looks plenty usable to me wide open, but certainly not in competition with my sharpest f/2 and f/1.4 lenses.
So for the sake of checking, here is a 100% of a remote control - I used an off center focus point, lit by the window behind it, handheld, focus is on the 'exit' button. I'm pretty happy with what it delivers tbh but don't examine 100% crops...well, ever, really, aside from editorial retouches, so I don't know really what this shows. Oh well.
Ok. I'm not going to let the sharpness thing put me off. Yet!
It's clearly a great camera otherwise it wouldn't be one of the most praised camera releases of modern times. So, I'm going to give this thing a chance and try to learn to work with it. Here's a few from today....

Hmmmm, your results at f2 do not coincide with mine! What sharpening have you applied in pp?
And, can I have your camera please?
Yeah, maybe you got a dud. While my lens isn't crazy sharp at f2, especially up close, I'd say it's probably in the same range as the photos above, although I haven't done any formal tests.
Same thoughts as douglasf13 - mine isn't crazy sharp, but I'm fine with it wide open, even close up (I'm looking for a messing-around shot I took of jellybeans, but can't put my hands on it).
This is shot RAW, converted in LR with no sharpening or other processing.
