I was lucky to be in the right place, right time for a nesting pair of GHO last year. Both mom and dad were keeping tabs on the little ones and they were tolerant of my presence. I didn't ever have one fly off at my presence nor swoop at me (thank god!). I understand they fledged successfully and am sure they are a scourge to the resident hawk, and rodent population.
I showed some of these last year but many have remained under lock and key. I never got to see one hunt but as you can see father owl did just fine bringing home the "bacon".

Nicely done Eric, and the video is neat. It's 6 for me followed by 2 and 3. I know where 2 GHO nests are located. One is near the top of a tall pine, and the other has a better angle, but somewhat obscured view. I've checked them both this year, but no activity yet ~Ron

Nice shots. # 7 for me. I have a GHO that hangs out in the woods across from me, but only time I get to see him
Is early in the morning and late in the day. Too dark for photos.
Congrats.

Nice shooting, Eric.
Love the two plus one almost hidden junior in #3.
Another favorite is #6 and the sound at the end of the video.

Thanks Chris...this was a pretty cool way to spend three days. The owl family was about a 5 minute walk from my hotel room and other than one other person who I shot with (who works at the hotel and clued me in to their whereabouts) people would only walk and look for a couple of minutes and get on with their hikes.
I had heard the hooting as I was leaving and made one more trip back where I had originally set up shooting and he was just sitting on a fallen tree no more than 2.5meters off the ground. I wish I had an attached microphone...he did his hooting three times before flying off with dinner to the nest.

Do you take reservations I hope you get to see them relatively unobscured this year. Having him hoot at me 3 times was one of the best wildlife experiences I've had...and I know it wasn't me he was hooting at as he had done it a number of times before I arrived.
