Mr. Jim, I would love to see a static shot of an eagle of 1DX with 500mm and one with 1DIV with 500mm if time permits and you can switch bodies quick enough. No tele's. Then crop to size and compare. And give us YOUR opinion on the variables. Tanx.
John
John, you should read Arash's review. He does a similar test to what you are talking about plus he does it at a variety of ISOs. His basic conclusion at lower ISO 1D4 has better details but higher ISO detail is better on the 1DX
My main goal is to compare the two cameras at more or less the same 'optical reach'. I'll try to do the same-lens comparison, too. Last weekend, the 1DX was on a 100-400L, while the 1DIV was on the 500L - no images from the 1DX.
Also, I plan to use an EF 40/2.8 as a "lens cap". Let's see what that might bring in.
Cheers, Jim
It was pretty snowy here today. Tonight will be even better, "freezing rain warning" in effect. My plans to compare the 1DX and 1DIV for a variety of lens/Extender combinations didn't work out. OTOH, I used the 1DX with 500/4L IS + 1.4x III for an hour or so, before the visibility went to grey. I think it did a bit better at tracking eagles 'below the tree line' (despite the snow), but I haven't looked at enough images to say for sure.
I had two 1D Mk4's..picked up two 1Dx's and both Mk 4's are sold now.
As good as the Mk4 is the X is better.
Until the X the 4 was the best camera ive ever used..

I'll be selling both of my mark iv's if I end up with two X's.

Ditto. Just sold my second 4 and will be picking up my second X this week.

I would imagine that would make a lot of sense when I think of your MMA shooting. Terrible lighting, you need the best ISO performance possible.
With the UFC's recent imaging changes, I think I've given up that I'll ever shoot a "big" ufc show. I've been shooting regional MMA since it was legal in PA and have shot in OH, PA, VA, WV and MD. That's more a labor of love, as I make more as a portrait/wedding photographer.
Even still, I'll use X's even if I never shot MMA again, but you are correct. For me, it's ISO ISO ISO.
I'm now using the 1DX DOF and M-Fn2 buttons on the front of the camera for IS and AF mode control. I'm just starting to get used to it, and I already miss it when I'm using my 1DIV.

I had the 1DX for 2 weeks... then had no need for my 1DIV after that... The high iso and the tracking advantage where very apparent to me
I only tried it for two days. I wish that I could afford one it's really a great camera
