p.2 #2 · What do you use your 70-200 f2.8 Mk ii for?

I recently got the 70-200 2.8II because my 3yo grandson started with ice hockey. I also am impressed with the pics/portraits it produces of him. I also have the f4 IS. I will admit it is my least used lens. However, it is extremely sharp and light and will always have a place in my bag.

Cheers, Steve

My guess is that you don’t need inspiration. Apparently you are inspired to use the 24-105 and 400. Go with it!

Some months back I realized I had rarely used anything but my 300 2.8 or the 300 with a 1.4 extender for the previous 12 months. I found it a bit humorous since at the time I had just received my new 24-70 II. I tested my new toy for a while then went back to my 300 since I was still enjoying the birds in my back yard.

Not much later I took a trip to Belize. The 24-70 and 70-200 (one on each camera) were all that I used. The landscape was the thing and the 300 just would not put things in context. Great for looking at a grain of sand – not so much for looking at the beach, so to speak.

When you need inspiration is when you are not using ANY lens.

I love the 4 stop IS when travelling.
No tripod opens a lot more opportunities as i find it easier to carry it than a tripod..

Love mine..

I use it for shooting my son playing ice hockey. Couldn't imagine shooting the game without it.

I just picked up a 70-200 mkII that will be getting here soon and plan on using it for concerts, events, family portraits, and sports.

It really is a great all around lens to fill in the long end. I use a 35 1.4 for the wide stuff. Pull out the 85 1.2 for REALLY low light indoor sports and just pray that I get a few shots where the AF kept up.

It is a pretty epic lens for events. I have the f4 version and when there's ample light, I love it. Admittedly, for family and friends, I don't really use it. But when I don't want to be in the action/ in the way, it's great.

Today I used it for a symphony concert with dancers, preceded by an instrument "petting zoo". See below - these are not cherry-picked shots from my catalog, just a few from what I shot during the one hour event.
I use the lens for portraits, landscapes and a lot of other stuff. The f/4 version is nicer for a casual "walkabout" lens, but when I need quick focusing in low light and the other advantages of f/2.8, I always go for the heavier lens.

While the 300 may not be good for looking at the beach it is very good for looking at subjects walking on the beach.

Just wondering if one really needs a 2.8 for such use. The f4 is a lot lighter!

As is usually the case, it depends. I like the flexability to be able to get shots at dusk or deep in the woods that I could not get without the 2.8 and at times want the narrower DOF to play down the background. I don't know where my whims will take me in photography so I try to keep all options open as much as possible.

The F4 is lot lighter, but anything indoor I always find myself needing the 2.8. I did love the F4 IS I had and it took great pics and so nice. If you never shoot indoors I would not hesitate to get that lens.

If you ever shoot indoors or plan too I would get the 2.8 version II its so so so nice, but a bit heavy.

If I need to isolate the subject, I can understand f/2.8 and bigger, BUT with the new incredible ISO performance on the new 5Dmk3 and 6D, I can forget also the IS...

This is the first lens I have had with IS and it really opens doors for night street photography. Pushing the ISO up to 3200 I can take hand held photos of buildings at 1/50 of a second and 200mm AND THEY ARE IN FOCUS. That is so freaking cool coming from my 70-200 2.8 non-IS. I think a lot of people have become so accustomed to having IS in their telephoto lenses that they forget its usefulness.

Still working out the kinks in how to integrate this into new roles in my photography but this lens kicks serious ass. It is brutally sharp and the flare control + much better coloration and contrast than previous versions really makes it an all around better lens for everything.

Not a particularly beautiful photo but it definitely shows this lenses usefulness in adverse lighting
