p.3 #1 · joystick broke on a 5D Mark III

I had the opposite issue with my 40D several years ago and it turns out the fix was to clean the shutter button assembly by running alcohol through the battery compartment - could be a similar issue mucking up the contact.

What is the shutter count for those of you who have lost the joystick? If it is a design flaw it seems somewhat futile to keep replacing the joystick as it will likely break again as experienced by DmitriM.

DmitriM, do you bring the camera to the Canon service depot here in Mississauga/Brampton?

Yep, the mississauga location.
My cameras are the earliest models as I was one of the first people to receive it. Perhaps this is why both of them are flawed and I pointed those things out many times here. Hard to estimate the shutter count, but photography is my full time job so I shoot a lot.
I am pretty sure it's because of the design flaw+bad/thin rubber gasket that holds the plastic joystick together. They will never admit it nor will they ever release the data on what breaks down with their cameras to avoid class action suits.

Interesting, I just inspected mine and it looks fine but I will be mindful of the issue. I took a few shots and realized how much I use the joystick to change the AF point and navigate left/right on image playback.

My camera is one of the early ones too - I bought it the first or second day it came out.

I brought the 5d3 to the Mississauga location for the light leak fix and had a change of heart and asked them to send it back to me as I don't think it would ever impact my style of shooting and I was reluctant to have them open it up unless it really needed to be.

Good luck with your subsequent repair.

It should still operate without the joystick cap. Canon will charge if it's out of warranty, though. Use it without?

Have the same problem, after just 2 weeks and about 200 shots, just driving with the camera on my lap, never noticed it happening, suddenly it was just gone and I never found the thing taht came off, seems to me that it should not be possible to tear it off without noticing...
so far no responce from Canon about the repair, I will keep you posted....

Update:

Canon Canada charged $280 to fix the joystick... The fee is beyond insane considering it is probably a 20 minute job with a 20cent part. Unfortunately they use flat-fee repair structure for anything they do. When you add the fact that search on Google shows a lot of people having the same issue, it's clear it is either a manufacturer's defect which should be fixed for free or deliberate attempt to milk more money out of us.

The joystick button fell off my 7 year old 1Ds III recently, and it's lost. I was about to call Canon Irvine, when I decided to find one of those parts. Five minutes later I had already bought two of the parts on ebay for $8 each and I'll press one on the stem in about a minute when it arrives. Saved a week or two without the camera and the postage and time to box it up, etc, even if Canon would do the fix for free.

+1 - DIY should be your first thought when it comes to any repair. Just think it through and make the call as to whether you can or can't do it yourself.

I don't think it would be possible to do DIY yourself. I believe for 5d3 you need to take the body cover off to install the rubber gasket(the part that usually wears out)

I was stupid enough once to pay Canon $150 to change the broken shoe on 580ex flash. Never again! It's a $35 part and exactly 2 minutes to install.

Had the joystick come off my grip for 5dIII. CPS gold total cost was $71.20.

At $280, I definitely would call Canon as thats ridiculous. Was it just the joystick for that price?

Update on my 1DsIII: I got the new joystick button, actually two, one for backup since they were so cheap. I underestimated the time needed to install. Including opening the mailing package, extracting out the new button, and pressing it on the little square nub on the joystick itself, it ran about 90 seconds. All is well now! Total cost: $8.50.

Can we revisit this discussion briefly.

Has anyone here actually purchased the 1DsIII MC button and successfully fitted it on a 5DIII?

My 5DIII multi controller button also popped off and was lost at a wedding...I sent it in to Canon and was quoted nearly $350.00 to fix it. A little steep IMO.

The 1DsIII buttons are available on ebay but I am not sure that they are interchangeable.

Thanks!

Do you mean that 5DIII buttons are not available online? Perhaps they are the same. For the cost, simply try one for the 1DS.

Yea, I was told you can't buy the 5DIII MC button without purchasing the entire back plate.

You're right though...I guess I can just give it a whirl and see what happens with the 1DsIII button, they are cheap enough.

Hey Guys,
I'd like to revive this topic for people who never fixed their camera. Recently, I ended up replacing the toggle button myself and it was super easy. I had to buy the entire toggle button module that cost $100 at ebay and a set of small screwdrivers ( very small ones ) I thought I'd encourage others to do the same yourself and save money this way
