part of the pain of the 24-70 II purchase is... the 82mm threads.
anyone have a recommendation for me re circular polarizer for this lens? Probably middle of the road... not looking to spend hundreds of dollars here, but $100 is OK.

I'm afraid that any 82mm CPL that you can find for $100 will do serious optical harm to the picture. Calling a $100 82mm CPL "middle of the road" is quite unrealistic.
that is half sassy, and half serious (ie not rhetorical... I just spent $2000 on a lens, I don't want to do something stupid here to downgrade the light before it even hits the front element...)
don't know how much stock to place in the lenstip review... but it certainly seemed well executed/impartial, and placed the performance of this Marumi filter close to B&W

I don't claim to have tested all or even most filters out there. I can just summarize that I have found most CPLs of this bargain range to be lacking. I have not tried the Kenko above.

I have a Marumi for the 24-105 that I am happy with.
Call the folks at 2filter.com for advice.
They sell all the major brands at excellent prices and you get someone directly to speak with.

The Hoya HD/HD2 CPL's are great and transmit about 0.5stop more light than regular CPL's. I got one for the 24 TS-E II, so I'm already set for the 24-70L II.
I got mine on ebay at a substantial discount on US and Oz prices.

Get a Lee system and use a square polarizer. With some adapter rings, you use the same filter set on all your lenses. Up front costs are high, but the quality is high, and you carry fewer filters. No vignetting except maybe the 17TSE which can only be used with a home made adapter.
If you use ND grads, you need rectangular filters anyway so you can position the horizon.

I use a B+W MRC 82mm KSM CP Extra Wide (95mm). I bought it for my TS-E 24/3.5L II, which explains the "extra wide' part. It also works well on my Zeiss 18/3.5 ZE. It doesn't fit inside the 24-70 II hood.

I agree: you aren't going to get a great 82mm CPL filter for $100. If you had a cheap lens, I wouldn't be concerned, but when you spend serious money on a lens, it's no time to cheap out on filters. I see the same thing with .22 LR competition rifles -- shooters spend nearly $3000 for the rifle and scope, then want to shoot Walmart .22 ammo! Crazy.
I like the Hoya Pro 1 and HD series. I also have a B+W Kasseman Wide (thin, sealed CPL) same as Jim C. mentioned, but 82mm, and love it, but it is pricier than the Hoyas.

About six months ago, I purchased a Hoya 82mm HD CPL (B&H sku# HOCPH82). Now I see that item is discontinued. Does anyone know why it was discontinued?

I have two of the Marumi CPL's. Excellent filters for the money. I definetely reccomend them.

+1 for the Marumi CPL's.
I have the 82mm and I'm very pleased with the filter and the results. The filter itself is a thin design and metal. The result is very smooth blue skies unlike others I've tried where the sky is a blotchy blue. This filter can be used with the Canon lens cap and does not need a slide in cap.
The lensTip review is very thorough and this review and other posts about Marumi is the reason I have 4 Marumi CPL's.

Because it was replaced by the HD2 and I cannot find what the difference is. Specs look the same. Maybe it has a newer coatings as they do seem to talk about the coatings a lot.
