I keep telling my wife that investing in assets like lenses is smart during these inflationary times. Now I can tell her that we own a rare asset which is no longer produced. I'm not sure that would support a Z9 purchase, but still....thank you good Sir!

In 2008 I bought a 200mm F2 VR for $1,500 in Seattle. About six months ago I bought a 200mm F2 VR2 for $1,750. Both brand new. F Mounts are not solid investments anymore because every wants Z mount. Bought a 300mm 2.8 VR2 for $1,000 even in like new condition locally a month ago.
Camera equipment in general doesn't really hold it's value anymore. I've paid for all of mine by paying attention to local ads and buying/selling here and there, so I don't really care either way.
Slight improvement to VR, reliability improved on AF-S motor and still serviceable by Nikon (the big thing to me). Also improved coatings, but optical formula remained the same.

I was joking, but appreciate the words My wife doesn't believe me when I say this and nor should she but it's still part of the fun of navigating an expensive hobby with a wife who doesn't have such wants
I buy used every time I can. Some F-mounts will certainly stand the test of time if the ftz inconvenience isn't a bother.

I noticed the colors aren't as vibrant on the VR2, and has far more vignetting wide open.
AF-S motors only go out if you don't take care of them. I've never had to replace one in any lens I've ever owned. In fact, on BCG I just saved two people from having to repair their 600mm F4's by telling them the basic secret of the ring AFS motors, lol.
My lens came in, looks new, in original box with 5 year warranty. I got a steal. So happy to have this lens back after having to sell it 3/4 years ago.

Make sure it has the card. You paid a premium for the warranty, and it's non-existent without it.
