Not sure but i would think that capturing the waves in Hawaii would be the same as capturing waves anywhere else, so maybe the appropriate question may have been "Could someone tell me a good lens to capture big ocean waves?" unless there was another purpose for the post entirely.
Hi, ive shot surfing quite a few times and generally the best lenses for shooting from the beach is the 500mm up to the 800mm depending on the beach. Most times its best to use F8 or so to have enough dof. Also, its best to have a nice tripod with a good panning head. A lot of Surf photogs even use video tripods.

I was thinking of renting a 400 5.6 and possibly a 1.4x teleconverter to capture the action and pray that it is bright outside while I am there.
As always, thanks in advance for the help,
Josh
Josh as others said longer glass is better but don't let that stop you from renting a 400 or 100-400L if that fits your budget better.
As far as jumping in the surf with a camera more than one Professional photographer has lost their life this way. That's serious business and left to those who know the water well.
Have a good time and go shoot even if the 70-200 is all you have. It might not be ideal but that doesn't mean it won't be fun!
