Sorry I didn't mean to single you out, just responding to your quote in a broader context of what's said about the 1D IV, especially now the 1D X is shipping. It's amazing how suddenly the 1D IV has gone from great to rather ordinary for some people.
The point is with have people here claiming the 1D IV sucks at high ISO and in some cases that means ISO 1600 or less. It's gets tiresome seeing the same crap trotted out whether it's the 7D or now 1D IV; yet no evidence is presented to back up their claims and there is plenty of evidence to the contrary.

$3500-4000 more is enough reason for me to stick with a 1DIV. I've shot mine at ISO6400, no complaints and don't care or need to go any higher. And I actually like the little crop factor.
I'm sure the 1DX is stunning, but it doesn't fit everyone's need or wallet.

I would like to here the reasons to go with the Mark IV over the 1Dx seeing it has focusing at F8 now. I personaaly have not used the Mark IV since the 1Dx, I just like it better. With that said the Mark IV is a great back up body.
I only think reasons now would be
1) price
2) 1.3 crop body
3) back up body
anything else?
Rob, I think you've stated the two major reasons...... In addition, there is the issue of AF point illumination, where I think 1DX is not as good as the older 1D models.

Yeah and the 1D IV IQ sucks of course.

Sorry Whayne. I've been taking considerable flak, recently. My sensitivity index is dialed up.
I agree with your support of the 1DIV. I'm happy to use the 1DIV up to ISO 6400 (with decent exposure), but not higher. OTOH, I'm slightly amazed by what the 1DX can do at 12k. I don't plan to perform a systematic evaluation of the 1DX for ISO above 12k, but I'll go there if I have to... Sort of like 6400 on the 1DIV, and 1600 on the 5D.

Lets not go off in a direction of the Mark IV is a bad camera, it is not at all. My wife and I own 3 of them. I decided to sell one to get a 1Dx. My main reason was to get a body with fulll frame again. I think the price of a used Mark IV is just incredible and a great value. I personally just like the 1Dx a bit better as compared to the Mark IV thus my point of the post. My point is not to say get rid of the Mark IV and the 1Dx is the best camera at all.
I am just someone who uses both cameras and I just do not read specs of the camera so from a real world experience I find myself reaching for the 1dx more. So I was curious what others thought who actually uses both.

I purchased one of the first few batches of the 1D IV in jan. of 2010. I have exclusively used this camera for birding with one lense. Canon 400/5.6. I can carry this combination all day. I can shoot out a car window in a flash. No hassle. Good reach. Can quick draw on birds in flight. Show me proof that the quality of the 1DX matched with the same lense I love to shoot (400/5.6) shot at the same distance as my 1D IV and I'll buy one. Any comparisons of the two with this lense?

Well, having been born ambidextrous, true to style I now shoot with the 1D IV and the D800E. The 70-200.2.8 II stays glued onto the Canon and is at the ready for one of those "quick, grab the camera, get that shot" moments.
The goal is not to upgrade....but to keep the Mrs. off balance with my camera equipment sell/buy/sell/buy behavior. So far it's working, but the day of reckoning is probably not too far down the road

Gary, you should know better, but good luck with this anyway.

Rob: I've a couple thoughts on the 1d1V vs: 1DX question.
I assume from you sharing here you do a lot of wildlife and birds which gives the 1DX a bit of an edge over the 1V as far as focusing is involved.
The 1V is a wonderful camera and I would love to have one in the future, but, I do have some concern right now of it becoming kind of a lame duck if Canon decides to move off in a different direction starting with the X camera. I'm sure Canon will continue to support it a bit, but the value may drop quickly.
The X is so much more expensive you really have to want the few incentives it has over the 1V; better focus, higher ISO etc.
I would suggest if you can afford the X, get it, but you will not have much of a handicap with the 1V.
Best wishes.

Don't forget the fact with a 1D X you lose a lot of reach if you are FL limited, which is common if you do birds and wildlife. All off a sudden your 600mm on the 1D X has less reach than a 500mm on the 1D IV. So you either have to become skilful at getting much closer, or be prepared to crop much harder, or use a TC much more frequently, or upgrade your glass, essentially making the price of a 1D X much higher than it's already absurd levels.

It seems that some people are stuck on the high ISO ability of the new 1Dx, but what is not mentioned is the superior Autofocus, and the rest of the goodies on the new 1Dx.
The Mark IV is and always will be an excellent camera, but I sold mine and replaced it with the new 1Dx. If I was using a camera for one thing and one thing only, I think I would choose a camera that did what I wanted for the specific task at hand.
That means Nikon, Canon or whatever camera I need to get the images I need.
As a wildlife photographer, yes I gave up a bit of reach for the best auto focusing camera on the market today, period!
Some people state that the 1D IV can be used all the way to ISO 6400, but I think for bird photography that is a falsehood, as anything above 2000 ISO needs serious work in post to get rid of the color noise. I don’t even like the results at 1600 ISO but have never had a problem going to 1600 with good exposure technique.
The new 1Dx even at 3200 ISO has no color noise in the images, and at 12,800 ISO has no real color noise to talk about.
The camera fits the hand better than the Mark IV which I have owned since new even though it’s a bit bigger and heavier.
Has a new shutter and mirror assembly rated now at 400,000 cycles. Has new processors, and a dedicated processor for Autofocus.
Better menu, with help built in. Has two new buttons to assign custom functions to, has a new toggle switch for vertical shooting.
Better white balance, Better metering now focuses at F/8 and the red illumination has been addressed.
Has a larger and better Lcd on the back and top of the camera. Has dual CF slots.
In a nutshell the Autofocus on this camera is stellar and if not for that alone is worth the upgrade. I personally think it's the price that people don't like, but if I remember correctly the Mark IV on debut was not a cheap camera by any means and chimed in at around $5,999. Too many people here and on other forums continue to compare Canon to Nikon for price points and features and so on.
Here is shot from the 1D IV, a fantastic camera with good autofocus.
Due to the fact that I like all facets of photography, Macro, Dance, Street, Landscape and so on, and don't only shoot birds. I think the features of the new 1Dx fit my shooting style better than the previous 1D IV.
I was never as excited to use a camera as I have been with the new 1Dx. Coming from the 1D III to the 1D IV my enthusiasm was not as high as it is with this new dream machine.
For wildlife, I totally agree that focal length matters. Also your present line-up of lenses. But come on let compare Apple to Apples and stop all the bickering between Canon users here and elsewhere.

Love the 1DX for indoor sports/equestrian but outdoors in FL limited situations I really miss those 6 MP's that the 1D4 offers. Since my low light needs are covered now I'm really hoping that the 7D2 is not a crippled upgrade. The 7D pixel density, 8 FPS, and better AF would be a killer combo with an updated 100-400 zoom.

When cropped to 1.3x the 1DX only offers ~10MP. If you shoot FL limited like I do it makes a difference.
1D X is close to 10.8MP when cropped to 1D IV FOV, so only a tad better than the 1D III.
I would have jumped on the 1D X if it were the same 22MP as 5D III. 1D IV and 5D III together give me as much as the 1D X for basically the same price.

so wait a minute. here's what i'm thinking. i only shoot wildlife (95% birds) and normally only in great light so high iso does not mean a thing to me; its about as useful as a camera with a built in radio as far as i am concerned. i currently have both 1d4 and 7d which i use with my 500/1.4x.
the 5d3 has the same autofocus upgrades as the 1dx, right? so, since i am ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS in a focal length limited situation, and i don't care about high iso since i'm shooting in bright sunlight, why would i, if i were to hypothetically purchase another camera (which i am not looking to do), not go with the 5d3 and its 22.3mp for half of price of the 1dx and its 18mp?
