Is it just me noticing this, but are the ones who say "sharpness is overrated" Canon shooters?
Nope. It's the people who shoot other stuff. Film, Leica, alt lenses, large format. Absolute sharpness is only one part of choosing a lens. Hell, the 50mm 1.8 is sharper than the 1.2L or the 1.4. If sharpness were everything.........

It probably begs the question are Canon shooters just more skilled in web sharpening or does Canon appeal to more skilled photographers in general?
I visit this forum because of the very pretty people pictures for a little while now. Over time I have come to admire a few wedding photographer's works here. One thing I do notice is that for some reason the photos that are really nice seem to be shot by photographers using Canon. I am sure these same folks might still produce high quality images irregardless. But it is odd that the ones that are really fantastic seem to use Canon. It's the overall unquantifiable feel of the images that are so pleasingly produced.
At least it is the case on this wedding forum.
No offense to the Nikon shooters. There are a few that are pretty good too.
What are we talking about here? I notice more Canon shooters share their work with others, while Nikon shooters don't show their best work because it gets stolen so often. Personally, I only show my best work irl to people, the normal stuff that has been done a lot, I put them on my facebookpage It also depends where you're from, a Canon shooter from your coutry may seem better than a Nikon shooter from Africa/India,... Because the culture and creative mind of that people is totally different. (some of that work from there is so different and amzing in an other way) I personally see as many amazing shots from Nikon shooters as from Canon shooters. Also Sony, Pentax shooters have amazing images, but you have to take in account how many people shoot with it.
I've been having incredible luck with a 1D3 and Sigma 50/1.4. I really want a Canon 50/1.2, but I don't see any reason to change yet. This is pretty much SOOC with no other pp (there's lots to clean up there)...just resizing the standard sharpen for web setting in LR3...sorry, its a HS senior, not a bride
