ouch! something similar happened to me a few years ago. Just purchased a brand new 40D and 70-200 IS. My girlfriend and I decide to take her niece and nephew to the park. I get so concerned with putting them in the child seat and strapping them down, I forgot I rested the camera on top of the car. We drive off. I hear a sound of metal and plastic tumbling in the street....

You're not a true photography geek unless the camera is strapped in while the kid sits on the roof

p.2 #3 · When stupidity costs you money

The only stupidity i've managed so far was leaving my Mountain Hardware jacket in a guesthouse in Singapore - it had nice large pockets that could comfortably hold my 350D/50mm f/1.8 for walkaround purposes. The pockets on its replacement (Haglöfs) tend to snag the camera on the way out though, causing the camera/lens combo to take a tumble on a pavement, destroying the lens. The stupid part in this story is that i ignored the voice in my head and repeated the very same trick with the replacement 50mm f/1.4 just 3 days after i bought it. Cost 2/3 the value of the new lens to repair it.

Turned out to be an extremely expensive mistake, forgetting my jacket, and to make it worse i much preferred the one i lost to it's replacement.

Congrats on 18 months! Before you know it, turrible (Charles' Barkley voice) twos' will be here!
I dropped my 1Ds into a creek last year and it landed face flat on my lens on some rocks. Super lucky nothing really broke

Ugh, all these stories make me cringe. I know that sinking feeling when you destroy something expensive all too well.

Luckily, so far I've only really lost one piece of gear: my first dSLR, a Pentax K100D. I had the camera sitting on my desk with the strap hanging off the edge. As I was turning around in my chair I caught the strap and it hit the horn of my stratocaster on the way down, shattering the LCD screen.

To this day I still walk over and move people's camera straps when I see them hanging off of desk edges.

A stupid "accident", Robert. But it is just gear. Nothing that can not be exchanged, even it may hurt the vallet. I hope you got nice shots?

As far as I see it , you look like a great father to me. The more because you able to see what a great mother your wife is. Go on beeing you. Your boy will love it (and you)!

Time to stick it on ebay as 'lightly used'

At least it died being used for important family pics.

Amateur - talk to me after you have had a 5dii with a 500mm go for a bath in some salt water! Embrace the pain and be glad it was only a flash.

I killed a 1DIII in the ocean, but not a 500mm.

Was searching for bare bulb flashes and saw this.

Not sure if it'd help you for next time.

I keep thinking the 500mm would make a good lamp base, but then I would be reminded of my stupidity every time I looked at it.

Maybe it is time to upgrade to a 600EX? Now that you have a 5DMK3 all of the 600 EXs features are available to you.

The other day I left my Think Thank bag at the airport carousel as I went to get a taxi. When I loaded my luggage in the taxi, I realized that I had left my Think Tank bag loaded with my 5DIII, 70-200L IIS 2, and my 24-105L. I looked like OJ Simpson to go grab it minutes later.

That’s a bummer……..You know the old saying, “If you’re gonna be stupid, you gotta be tough” (or rich). Don’t sweat it, this will be a great story to tell him one day. After he’s done with the legos, use them to build a little shrine to hold your flash……When he’s your age it will be priceless to him.

Congrats on the 1.5 b’day, before you know it he’ll be wanting the car keys, enjoy every minute of it…….even though there will be some very long hectic days, the years go by fast.

Sounds like you’ve got a great wife and are smart enough to appreciate her (even if you do melt flashes), never lose sight of the important things; like a wonderful wife and healthy kids. My wife is one of those truly magic people that raised three great kids. Those type women are few and far between, take good care of her.

We are on the other end of the spectrum; we’ve got a couple new grand babies nearly a year old. My flash story is brought to you by my grandson (he’s 4). I bought two 580 II’s and a set of radio poppers; with all these grand kids running around I thought I better learn about off camera flash. They came to visit this summer and we took them to Kings Canyon to see the big trees. I was trying to do some creative lighting so I was setting the flashes up for fill flash (my grandson was “helping” me), while I was fiddling with the settings he picked up one of the flashes and threw it in the creek, he had been throwing leaves in the creek and was fascinated watching them float away, so he thought he would try my flash…….580’s do not float.

Sorry to hear about your flash Robert...as the parent of a toddler I can definitely relate to this story...
