I can never understand that argument. 17-40 on a FF is such a completely different lens than on a crop that you will have to add a standard zoom anyway . Why handicap yourself by a stop (and let's face it the old crop bodies need all the light they can get) just 'cos at some point in the future you may get a a ff. the extra stop AND IS makes the 17-55 a much better lens for the crop
Good lenses always hold their value so a 17-55 bought well will sell for very close to what you paid.

I think he said it all when he said "photobooth camera." Given it's use, you might as well go with the cheapo 18-55 non-IS since your going to be shooting at low ISOs, wide, and with small apertures. All the photobooths I've seen for weddings have pretty good flash lighting.

+1,000,000 from someone who made this mistake ..and moved to full frame later. I totally wish I had bought the 17-55 IS or the tamron 17-50 (VC or Non VC) as my first good lens. Don't let that red stripe lust steer you wrong.

It's not such a hard argument to understand...it is completely a different lens on a full frame and the jump to pick up a full frame such as the 5Dc at a good price relative to the costs of the lens being discussed is a reasonable and valid thought...17mm to near 70mm...good IQ...I think you could get a Canon 17-40L and a 5Dc for the price of the 17-55 f/2.8 IS + maybe a couple hundred bucks...both the 17-40 and the 5D refurb...and unless you plan on shooting where the light is not so good, you shouldn't need the IS...and f/2.8 might not be fast enough...if you want nice bokeh...you may need to go to a fast prime...

I bought the 17-40 nearly 10 years ago to use on my EOS 3 and Elan 7E. Soon after that the first good "affordable" DSLRs appeared and I went digital and transplanted the 17-40 on my 10D. Pretty much a yawn but, of course, the 17-55 2.8 didn't exist yet (nor did the Tammy 17-50). It really wasn't wide enough or long enough and lacked IS. On the other hand, when I bought a 5D a few years later the 17-40 was redeemed and became fun to use again. So I wouldn't call it a mistake as it the best you could do back in the day when most of us bought it for crop cameras.
If I was shopping for a good quality zoom at a reasonable price, I'd grab the EF-1 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS USM. The 17-55 has great IQ but, like the 17-40, isn't wide enough or long enough for many of us.

I use the 17 - 40L on a 40D and it is great for studio work...the crop eliminates the softer edges and it is a great zoom range for my studio size. IQ is outstanding. It also gives great negs with my 1V.
However.....two zooms I still use that are excellent are the 24 - 85 USM...and the even better 28 - 105 mk2 USM (stress Mk2 version...made in Japan) .
I have used this lens at 85mm at F5.6 and the 85mm f1.8 also at F5.6 and I would challenge anyone to tell the difference when viewing A3 prints. £100 each tops..often much cheaper.
