p.2 #1 · Nik Software And Capture NX

I think that Google will sell off the rights to Silver Efex, Color Efex, etc.. to some other company and they will continue on as "Brand X Silver Efex" or whatever.

I don’t believe this acquisition will benefit anyone who isn’t a smart-phone aficionado or a social networking addict. The cynic I am, I'm more concerned that Nik plug-ins could disappear entirely.

I wouldn't see them disappearing. What I see would be the debasing of them. Google is about mass appeal. So mixed in with the tasteful prefab settings and recipes would be the garish crap that appeals to the common masses. Lots of photo apps for the masses to do the goofy effects to push them sales. I am jsut hoping google doesn't make Nik +1 to the pile. Sad things is if the latter happened...death of the product might be better lol..

CNX3...be nice to see. Adobe nut swingers like swinging off them nuts...not even gonna go there. CNX2 was not that bad. Jsut needs some more refining.

Why I am keeping an open mind. Google may not wreck nik and give the financial backing or kick in the ass to get CNX3 out the door. 1 out of 2 I'd be happy with. Both and they get an internet cookie.

With all due respect, did you say Capture NX2 IS NOT a good software? I wonder if you know how to work the NEF files with it!
I am going to give you my opinion. I am convinced it is the BEST software you can use with NEF files. Its sharpening machine is far superior to anything I have used to edit RAW files and Nik put some wonderful tweaks in it, like color control just to mention one of them, that make the life of the person working with the software less complicated.
I will say it is still somewhat slow,

Google or any company that acquires another will always say nice things about it, they aren't going to come out and say the software is a dog. They bought Nik for the mobile app Snapseed in response to Facebook's purchase of Instagram. They know there are other products in the company but they have no idea of what to do with them yet.

I am in the software business and I am working with a company recently purchased by Google and its very much the same thing. I have worked for companies that have been acquired by big corporations like Google, and the recipe is similar. Go 100% with what you bought the company for and assimilate it, take your time in figuring out the rest and what to do with it.

It's a frustrating program to use for me but I get the best results from opening NEFs in NX2 then saving as a Tiff in CS6.

Oh hell no they won't. They have a lot of patents under those software titles. And after the last Apple fight with Samsung. They've been learning they have to horde patents like the rest of them just to protect themselves.

Google will have no part of NX3 or whatever the next version of Capture is branded as. However I'm sure Nikon has bought the rights then they had with Nik Software to use the Plug-ins to maintain edited NEF for future versions.

Or they need to make some strip tool which i'd love to get rid of the Meta data and return the NEF to "unedited".

"Capture NX is not a very good software "

I just love these LR fanboys.... specially when they say such nonsenses without even knowing the software. Try to edit a NEF with active d-lighting ON on LR and then CaptureNX and observe what Adobe is hiding when they advertise CameraRaw...

LR is a good photo manager. When I want to to real edition, I use Photoshop. For basic and better editing CaptureNX is much more flexible than LR. For photo management I use Bridge.

By the way, great slideshow module LR! It sucks so much....

madeinlisboa, I completely agree with you. I've tried LR through a couple of version releases and always found CNX2 much better for me. Guess I am just a simple man!

I ow all of the different RAW converters. Nx2, capture One pro, Lightroom 4 and Cs6. No matter how hard I try and use all of these programs I still end up back at Capture NX2 for me it provides the best image. I have no problems with speed and saving settings or batching is a peice of cake.

i don't care really much about NX2, i really dislike to pay for the software of the cameras i already bought.
Actually this is shame, as far as i know Canon's software is free.

View NX2 is free RAW converter and provided with your camera. Capture NX2 is not free and is a full editing suite much like Photoshop. DPP is free but is no different then ViewNX2.

I almost hate to jump in here, because the LR fanboys go crazy when you don' t genuflect before their product, but---
I use NX2 daily, haven't had a crash in 2 years. It is slower, but the quality is much better, and since I don't need to shoot several thousand shots to be sure I have covered a wedding, the speed isn't that important to me.
(Who are the hobbiests?) By the way, it has never lost my entire library or had a new version that was incompatable with the files from the previous!
What I find strange, is the venomous attitude toward anyone who doesn't toe the LR line! I really don't care what software YOU use. Looking at the LR forum, I see hundreds of pages of problems. While you are dealing with that, I'm out shooting and producing great files.
Also, I'm going to call out all of you who continually pronounce NX as dead---show me some proof, or shut the F**k up! You are like a bunch of old ladies gossiping over bingo!

p.2 #15 · Nik Software And Capture NX

Capture NX2 is very good if you only select no more than five images to process from each shoot, and you don't need to open its raw conversion as a smart object in Photoshop. Its downsides are plenty but its rendition of Nikon colors is superb and the best, though you can achieve much better coloring in Photoshop later if you want.

LR is great if you're a volume shooter but its fatal limitation is its rendition of skin tones if you care. C1Pro is the best in skin tone department but just like CNX2 you can't open its raw conversion as a smart object in Photoshop. Unlike LR's RGB readings are expressed in percentages in ProPhoto Color Space, ACR is much better and it gives actual RGB value readings if you need to correct color but it won't give you other fancy stuff that LR offers, and the best part is you can open its raw conversion as a smart object in Photoshop. By having multiple different raw conversions from the same RAW image, you can achieve much much more possibilities and much quicker than all other tools can offer. I use them all for my needs but it really depends on what tool is the best tool for a given image. However, if you only want to spend your money on just one tool, one general tool, I would say Photoshop and it comes with ACR. And nothing beats it.
