I agree putting them up against one another in pissing matches is pointless. I do like that Nikon is pushing Canon's buttons and am awaiting eagerly with Canon's answer. If we did not have Nikon pressing Canon, I wonder if we would have the great AF in the 5D3?
You get a lot of image quality for that price, but somehow I'm still more impressed with what you get with the D800. That is replacing a D3X for a lot less after All. I would save up and get the D800 although I understand that not everybody can afford it or need the extras. But the D800 is one of a kind so far.
I think this makes it pretty clear there's not going to be a cheaper Canon FF in the near future. They seem to avoid being at the same price point like the plague.
At best I think we'll see the 5DIII slowly slide down in price.
I have absolutely no brand loyalty. I can say is that if I wasn't invested in Canon gear I would go Nikon without a doubt. They are kicking a$$ and taking names right now.

No doubt. This may be my first full frame camera. If only their lens lineup was just a bit better. . .

I know the price of the 5DMKIII is high, but man, it's such a great camera. I'm curious if Nikon camera are really that much better, or if it's just the high price of Canon (more gear for same money with Nikon). The 5DMKIII & 1DX seem to be getting great user reviews -- is Canon still not up to par with Nikon?

hopefully, for Nikon, the D600 does not have the issues of the D800
What are the odds of that happening, since they will be building it in a plant that likely has even lower QA/QC standards (if that's possible) than where the D800 is being built...?
So I spent sometime visiting the various sites about the D600. Seems that the working pros are not interested with this camera. Citing things like 1/4000th speed. Ergonomics. Inferior AF (based on a cropped d7k) and other stuff.
But I think the underlying goal of this camera is to appeal to the casual photographer that will not use faster than 1/4000th speed because of fast lenses in the day. Will have lots of time to compose and image. Will mostly use centre-point AF.
KR seems to prefer it over the D800. It's the camera that Nikon should've created. Huh.

Depends who you are. Landscape photographers might get along great with this. Think of someone hiking to remote locations... light weight design is great.

Where is their wedding and event camera?
What they have on their side is a sensor. That's kind of it.
Canon have much better lenses, which will make a much bigger difference, at least out of studio. The 5d3 is an incredibly handling camera - very close to a 1 series - and many are saying they don't love the ergonomics of the d800. Canon are about to release what appears to be the sharpest zoom around. Pretty much everyone agrees the 1dx is better than the d4 (except for Nikon people). They have green-cast screens and serious AF problems. But no one seems to notice in these discussions. I honestly think people are just down on Canon and think the grass is greener.
I'm genuinely surprised that Nikon have managed to get everyone to buy into the "sensor is all that matters" argument.
And I totally agree - low ISO their sensors are fantastic! I think I just have a totally different view of what's important in a camera system... In that ONE way they are kicking a$$ and for some people that's important and for others not.
I certainly can't agree with you. I think Canon have taken the bigger step forward for *my* work with this generation. Studio and landscape photographers are likely to disagree.

Why do you think the d800 has 36MP? Because the 5d2 was a ground breaker in terms of resolution and pushed Nikons buttons for 3 years.

probably shouldn't have question marks there.
ridiculous AF. works like a beast.
Yes the Af of the 5D III is brilliant and to me that is worth the price of admission. It doesn't matter how good a value a camera may appear, if you can't get consistently focused shots especially in servo mode, then you'll quickly realise it was a waste of money.
It's why people buy L lenses like the superteles, Yes horrendously expensive, but once you see the quality of the results you soon forget the finacial pain as you enjoy how crazy good these lenses are. Nothing worse than thinking you've nailed a great shot only to get home and see the AF let you down and the lens is soft. I rather spend the money and get great results than save it and be constantly disappointed.
I know the D7000 has not been regarded that highly as far as AF goes, so I don't expect miracles from the D600. It's a great value camera for the money but if I were doing action work, or working in low light etc, I don't think it will touch the 5D III, but it still may be good enough for most people? I would be interested to see how the D600 AF compares against the 5D II and 7D.
Too bad Canon can't ever post sample images like that. They are both excellent; love that first shot of the old fisherman, the clarity is superb.
Yeah we all know the Sony sensors are the ducks guts at the moment, but Canon counters with much better glass IMO and AF, so I'm willing to live with the inferior shadows. You can work around that most of the time, but damn it would be nice to have this quality.

Not at the insane $7000. It's heavier than the 500 f/4 II, lacks IS, was designed very long in order to help keep costs down, yet has this crazy price. $4-5K would be more sensible. Still wish Canon would do a 200-600 f/5.6 IS

It happens both ways, and it's good for consumers
Yes, it happens both ways. Lately, last 2-3 years, Nikon has been pounding sand with their camera releases. I am impressed both at the quality of the sensors they are releasing and the price points these cameras are coming in at. Canon will have to respond in both sensor quality and pricing...which will put a smile onto my face.
We have seen the popularity of the mirrorless cameras awaken the big giant and they were forced to enter that game. Love to see the likes of Sony, Oly and Panasonic raise the anti in that game so Canon comes up to the table with a better mirrorless offering.
This competition is good for everyone and I personally love to see the likes of Nikon and Sony release great innovative cameras at affordable prices. They will all push the big giant to follow their leads.

From my perspective, the sensor is the largest piece of the pie. Was it not just a few years ago everyone bragged about Canon's lead in sensor technologies, their clean ISO, their megapixels. All of a sudden this does not matter much anymore? What has changed other than Nikon taking the lead in sensor technologies?
