I've made nearly every mistake you can in the wedding world. Hosting with GoDaddy was one of the few I avoided.

actually godaddy has been excellent for support and reliability for me until today. Everytime I've ever called I got a very helpful PERSON who spoke English immediately. I'm not down on them for today - just about everyone who is anyone gets hacked by the anonymous group eventually.

They definitely get a bad rap for some reason but I've been with them two years and this is the first time I've ever had an issue of any kind. Never even had to talk to anyone with tech support because I've literally never had a problem with their hosting.

The issue was not their hosting.

It's their DNS that was down. So it probably affects anyone who registers their domain using godaddy, even if they host the site somewhere else.

I'd like to chime in as some one who has dealt with godaddy as both a former customer, and an IT person helping others.

Godaddy has always been great on the phone but terrible in practice. I got very tired of calling to get things fixed that they broke with out informing their customer base, be it email settings, dns settings, ftp settings, restrictions on storage etc.

Now as some one who often has to be forced onto the phone with them to help clients, I find them worse then ever, Caught blatantly lying or blaming other companies for their own faults. Be it apple for 'changing' their settings and not allowing their email to work,or Microsoft for 'changing' outlook. All with out updating any software on multiple machines, or even when telling the the issue is 100% on their end.

And, as a side note, as a US citizen, paying a company to host my website that is actively supporting a lack of net neutrality and attempts to tell their customers one thing and backhandedly do another is enough on it's own to switch away.

Lastly, and It's been a while since I've used their web interface, but last I checked it was rooted in 1995 in a world where they are catering to literally the lowest demographic of people buying into domain hosting to have such a shitty interface is laughably bad.

Yes Anonymous really screwed over a lot of small business owners today, but I hope you understand godaddy is not a good company to start with, I highly recommend Dreamhost, they have been extremely loyal to me for less then I was paying at godaddy, better more stable coverage, and they even recovered a subdomain I accidently deleted, Something that happened to me on godaddy and tech support laughed over the phone. [side note, terminal commands to send things to your FTP should be double checked better ]

My domain is registered with them an my site didn't go down. I use HostGator for hosting. Don't know if that had anything to do with it.

Could you imagine, as an employee of GoDaddy's IT team, going in to work today and this is the mess you get to fix? Talk about pressure...

DNS settings are managed and served by whoever is hosting your site, not your domain's registrar. Simply having your domain registered at GoDaddy wouldn't of had any effect on your site if it was hosted anywhere else.

For those who's email was impacted by GoDaddy's problems yesterday, should really move their email to Google Apps, there just really isn't any reason not to. It's a far more robust and reliable service than any individual hosting company can provide.

Yeah, I don't think it affects all of their customers. Your DNS may or may not be with godaddy.

When you signed up with HostGator, did you go to your godaddy's account and point the domain to HostGator's servers? If yes, then you are using godaddy as your DNS as well. And you are lucky it didn't go down.

Here is godaddy's explanation: http://www.godaddy.com/newscenter/release-view.aspx?news_item_id=410

Hmmm.

They make it sound like it wasn't an attack that brought their service down, at all. If that is the case, then shame on them. I smell lawsuit over lost business.

But maybe it was an attack that took out their internal routing tables and I don't know how to read between the lines?

Or maybe it really was an attack and they want to spin in differently. The last thing they need is for current (or future) customers to think something like that could happen again.
