D800 much cleaner @ISO6400 than my D3/D700. This is huge in dark venues,
guess I should also mention....the AF in low light is superb.

FWIW the D3s is STILL the darkside king, even over the D4
One must pay to play, methinks.

I couldnt agree more, this is a nice advantage to me, not huge...but still an advantage I see with the D800 over the D700/D3. I have both, and now when I pick up the D700, its a noticeable difference with the AF, and it seems like a huge difference.

So, I dont understand anyone selling the D800 for a D3 when the price brand new is not that much different, unless the file size is a big deal and a deal breaker, there really is no justifiable reason for selling a D800 for a D3. A D3s I can understand, but for the extra cost its hard to justify for me personally.

I don't know about that TM. I like the files I get out of my D4 better than my D3s. I find them easier to work with, and better across the range of what I generally shoot. I know there are tests at the extremes of camera capability that suggest they are equal in many ways, but in my real world you wouldn't get my D4 from me.

And the auto-iso on this thing rocks. I love love love it.

You're right about the AF difference. After using a D4 or D800... a D3/D3S/D700 feels like its broken.

This is exactly why I would not go back to a D3/D700. The large files might be a downside to some, but the better high iso and the low light AF are two features that I think are pretty critical to any wedding photographer.

I love my D700, but I couldn't imagine going back now that i've become accustomed to the D800.

bthatton, you are exactly right. I honestly felt like my D700 AF broke when I used it after using my D800 for about a week on its own. Its a very noticeable difference, and a very good improvement, that I would choose to grab my D800 over my D700 for that alone, aside from the other improvements. Like I said, Im not sure why anyone would sell a D800 for a D3...unless they are using all 4G memory cards and have an i3 processor that cant handle the file size increase.

We do everything with a pair of D700s, which are essentially the D3 without an integrated grip. They've never let us down. The D800 is certainly an interesting camera, but our portfolio probably wouldn't look any different if we were shooting with a pair of them. Use what works.

Agree with this. Also, how would this switch translate to your clients and in turn to your bottom line? Beyond looking at it from a technology/gear standpoint, think about how it might translate to revenue.

A friend of mine just recently went through this. He got an 800 but just couldn't warm up to it. The files sizes are just killer for wedding photography and there's no option for a smaller size RAW file. The focus on the thing was also sub par. I think he did send it in to Nikon for some adjustments but when he got it back it still wasn't what he thought it would be. When I talked to him about it he just kinda shrugged and made a sour face and state he just didn't dig the camera. He's got his dual D3's going now and is happy. Now if only we could have a 5D3 with a D800 sensor.....

Both of these statements make far too much sense. It's just wrong for both of you to come here with those kind of mind boggling statements.

.

Troof. Seriously though, the D3's worked just fine...I'm thinking when the D3s bodies drop in price, that will probably be the next logical step.

If I were doing more than Wedding photography where the MP and extreme detail would come in handy, then it'd be a different story. Good bye D800, it's been fun for the short time we had, ha. Again everyone's input (from both spectrums) is always interesting to read.

2 tb hard drives relatively inexpensive. Doubt towers or upgrades are that bad.

I travel the world with a pair of Nikon D3 Cameras and couldn't be happier! From extreme mud and sand in Australia to Wedding's in the West Indies. For me I'm as content as I will ever be. They are such capable beast in my opinion. Is the D3s nicer and even more the D4, of course they are. BUT, sometimes enough is enough. All I have to do now is become a better photographer!

Not hard to lose enough to pay for a tower and hard drive buying and selling cameras.
