If you have 35/1.4 and 50/1.2 on a 5DII, would you consider getting 40mm STM?
I'm trying to justify buying it, at $299 seems a very good bargain. however, it could very well be a very expensive paper weight, if you ended up using 35 and 50 more.
Thanks for all opinion.
If you are bothered by the weight of 35L or 50L then get 40mm, if not then don't buy it. IQ of 40mm is on par with 35L and you can't even compare the weight and size. I only took it once or twice off of my 5DII in order to use a 70-200 f/4 IS. And my 24-70 is becoming a paper weight now.
I've curbed my gear lust so I have been ignoring most product development for the last couple of years. But last Thursday I saw a colleague with a Canon pancake. Completely ignorant of the design I was simply ecstatic. One hour after testing the lens I had one on order. There happened to be a EUR 50 cash back on the EUR 189 price, so there was no better time to jump in.
What a great little lens!
To each his own when it comes to its usefulness, but I like having a 40mm pancake between 35 and 50mm fast primes. Also as I dislike carrying more than a couple of lenses at a time I'll be carrying this lens a lot as a back up standard.
Have several much more costly L lenses, but none are any "better" than the 40. When price is factored, one or two aren't as good.
But it wouldn't make much of a paperweight, unless tissue was the paper.
Great little lens.
I have the 'lil buzzy' 35/2 and let my 'nifty fifty' go when I sold my 5D on EBay.
So, I was on the fence about the 40. I have had very good results with my 35, but the focus can be annoying as it sounds like an angry bee trying to land on a flower blowing in the wind.
I found a good deal on the 40 on the B&S board, and pulled the trigger. I really like the small size and on my 6D (especially when I pull off the L bracket), it will make for a ultra-light, small DSLR. I'm looking forward to the freedom of a lightweight rig, or the pocket-ability if I'm out with one other larger lens mounted.
If I really am happy, then the 35/2 can be sold, probably leaving me with a bit of positive cash flow.
I have a fast 35/50 as well, and I still bought the pancake. It's a fantastic sharp little lens. I just saw it on the Canon refurb site for $79 as well, but it seems out of stock.
very happy with mine. Given what the OP asked damn right I'd buy it still even with having faster primes on either side. It's too damn cheap and too damn sharp and well built for the money to say no.
It's a very good lens (got on sale for $150 ) but if the size / weight of the 35/50 don't bother you, why buy the 40mm? Of course it's so cheap, you can certainly buy it "just 'cause".
Also, sometimes it's nice to have my 5D3 look almost like a good bridge camera instead of a "pro monster" it can look like with larger lenses, so that's something the 35/50 can't really compete with....though it DOES look a little....stubby
I bought the 40 and could not be happier with it (paid 150 new). I have a 50 but no 35. Super sharp wide open, pleasing bokeh and super light! Makes my 5d2+40 pleasant to carry all day.
I bought mine for $150 - at that price it was 'why not?'
(and I like the novelty factor of a tiny lens)
IQ is very good, AF can be a little slow, f/2.8 can be a bit limiting in low light.
Main reason for buying it is size/weight, and it's much less intimidating for candid shots - people get scared when you point a big lens at them
Considering that you already have the EP-1 as a small/light camera, and you already have the faster 35 and 50, I wouldn't bother
It does - my new SL1 and 40mm showed up the other day. I've not put any other lens on the SL1 yet. Compared to my 5dm2 with either the 24-104 or 70-200 2.8 mounted this combo is featherweight. I've not pixel peeped the images yet nut the ergonomics of the SL1are working well for me.
I highly recommend it. It is amazingly good for the price, small, goes unnoticed. If anything it may turn the heavier lenses in paperweights (I almost do not use my ZE 35/2 now; I wonder whether to sell it and get a the /1.4, or just... to sell it).
The size of this lens is interesting, but it's going to look daft on my 1Ds2 I just can't see myself using an f2.8 prime on my 7D, so haven't been tempted by it as yet.
