The Canon Rumours guy has given a CR2 rating to a rumour of a new 100-400L to be anounced by September. Exciting if true. Anyone out there have any other info on this? (I know it has been rumoured for years ...)

Wouldn't a 500 f/5.6L IS four-pounder be a killer lens?
One of these days, the 100-400L II will finally be released. It's been rumored to be announced at every Photokina event since 2002!
Now that they're able to get up to these very high ISO values without much degradation to IQ, I wouldn't be surprised that they come out with a lightweight 500. I'd love it. Sure would make race weekend photography a lot easier on the feet/back!

This would only happen if another earthquake happens in Japan or the Olympics was months away.

It would but fat chance it happening. A 500/5.6 IS would sell for around $4,000. A 400/5.6 with IS would cost half that and be a pound lighter!
I hope the Sony threat will carry over to a refreshed fast 135 prime.
No I think closer to $5-6K. I stop usually double the price or more. Still stupid and Canon would rather you use a 300 f/2.8 + 2x, they won't build a 600 f/5.6 IMO.

The current 300/2.8 is $7,299. Why would Canon lower the price for a longer lens?
If having a 600/5.6 will not eat into 600/4 sales then I see no reason Canon would not make one.
I would like to see a 1,000/5.6 IS at say 12 pounds?

Cheers

If it will happen in Sep, most likely we will see it in stores mid 2014 based on current Canon releases.
That would be awesome, though. After playing with the new 100/2.8 L IS USM and, what's worse, the cheapish Panasonic 100-300, I cannot help thinking that the IS on the 100-400 would rather benefit from an overhaul. I love my 100-400, but if they promised faster AF and better IS, I'd preorder it the moment it's announced.
