looks pretty nice to me, better than i was expecting from canon (i figured they'd go the nikon route). this looks nice and small, 22/2 is an excellent focal length and speed for a aps-c lens too. it's not a surprise for them to go low end first just like everybody else except fuji did. low end is where the majority of the market is. once they've ironed out some kinks and gotten more lenses out they can release a "pro" camera with a "pro" lens or two as a halo product to draw more people to their low end ones (not that they need it that much being canon).
Oh Bobby, please don't use those horrid, politically incorrect words "crippled and retard". In todays world you must say "design challenged" and "functionally impaired" otherwise you cast a degrading and negative pall over the device that may leave it scared for life and unable to reach its true potential.

I find it strange that Canon would name the camera so close to a previous product of theirs...
I wonder how Leica will react to the name, think of Olympus M --> OM
At least, they didn't put a "X" in the name.
Any ideas/guesses on the price? I'm thinking around $599 for the body and 18-55 kit lens which should match Sony Nex F3. It could also easily be $699 or $799. Latest price decreases have put the Canon G1X to $709 which might indicate they might be moving the G1X down in price to place the EOS-M at a slightly higher price. I'm bit curious how they're going to price this as the Canon G1X and several of their DSLRs are in the $600-$1000 US price range.

What we have here is another incremental step designed to maximize profit. Canon is making one mistake after another.
Maximizing profit is the opposite of making mistakes.

I personally prefer 4:3, but there's nothing inherently correct about it and 3:2 was long the standard in both the medium and small format worlds.
3:2 was only used on roll film to maximize the area, but sheets have always had ratios towards 5:4 or 4:3. The same goes for paintings, if we exclude very large panoramas.
I don't see any benefits with 3:2 at all. It's just that most amateurs expect "professional" cameras to have it, since they don't know much about larger formats than 24x36.
We are talking about an inanimate object here, not people. How can a description of an object be "politically incorrect"? The word "crippled" has been bandied around these forums over and over again to describe e.g. the pathetic AF system of the 5D Mk II. If words like cripple and retard should never be used or included in our vocabulary then they should be taken off the dictionaries altogether. They may be harsh words but they are not bad words. Besides, we are not politicians here and we want to keep politics out of these forums.

Uh, Bobby, byebyefilm was being sarcastic. The fact is, the word "retard" is one that most people in the special needs community find very offensive. It may not be offensive to you personally, but if you had a child with developmental disabilities and people around you were throwing around the word "retard" you might not like it as much.
It does seem like a difficult balancing act sometimes since some people are offended by pretty much everything, but part of being a civil society [is that compatible with the internet?] is trying to strike that balance. Of course, our lives are much poorer if we don't use words like "polack", "kike", "nigger", "raghead", "retard", etc to express ourselves [sarcasm alert].
Anyway, this is totally OT and we should get back to discussing the merits and failings of a camera that none of us has actually seen, touched, or used.

Now, that sarcasm is really politically incorrect here.
Please guys, look closer on the hotshoe, it does NOT have any extra contacts, those are just screws to hold it in place. It's probably not on the DSLR's because the have more space inside to attach it in a slicker way.
