Skibum, I am following your posts with interest. I want a good reason to upgrade, but having a 7D and 5D2, am not finding your posts all tooo helpful with that pursuit. 7D is still making a strong showing...
well 5D3 does offer (compared to 5D2):
better AF (vastly better for outer points)
50% better fps
quicker shutter response
shorter mirror blackout
C1-C3 functions can auto-update
instant 100% review at one click
video/LV toggle switch
video free of moire/aliasing
outline around hitogram
better screen
better jpgs (but don't ever turn NR above off or low or it's nasty wax works)
MFA at both ends of zoom
at least 1/2 stop better SNR
free of nasty banding in dark parts of high iso shots
(granted some of these could be an easy firmware for 5D2, but they won't be)
The EGS on the 5D2 is the main thing holding me back. I use MF lenses 90% of the time on 5D2 and am reluctant to give them up.
5D3 would possibly be a nice upgrade from 1D3 in terms of pixels per duck. However as your photos are showing, there's not much of an excuse to upgrade to 5D3 specifically for wildlife shooting when you also have a 7D.

Well if you do MF 90% of the time then the whole AF thing will be lost on you and without the EGS you'd actually be one to get WORSE focusing from the 5D3 than the 5D2. I admit the 5D3 with the regular focusing screen is disconcerting. Shooting f/1.4 and it seems like everything from your nose to the distant mountains are in perfect focus .

It seems a bit ironic to make that claim in this thread. If you're reach limited, the 1DIV pixel density will win out. Furthermore, much hyperbole always accompanies the latest and greatest new release. I'm sure the 1Dx is better at many things but they may or may not be significant to a particular photographer.
I'm (apparently one of the few...) still using the 5D "classic" I purchased way back when and have been struggling with the upgrade issue as well. From my brief experience the 5D Mk3 is far superior to the 5D, 5D2, and 7D for the way I normally shoot.
BUT...
Having the 7D will allow me to shoot differently than I have in the past, especially on vacation (zoos come to mind) and at childrens' events. For the price of even just the Mk2 I can have two bodies (5Dc, 7D) for different purposes, although I consider it an inconvenience to keep two around where most don't.
For a 5Dc owner, the 7D reach is even more significant -- especially the cropping kind.

The 7D has nearly 4x the pixel density of the 5Dc, so it is effectively like using a 2x TC on any lens you use on the 5D to get the same reach or pixels per duck, when FL limited.
