p.1 #1 · which Canon gear and lenses for La Palma, Canary islands
Hello, I'm preparing a short trip to the Canary islands in October. I currently use two bodies, a Canon 5D2 and a Canon 7D. As it is not easy to travel with both of them, which one would you suggest to take and which lenses should I accordingly choose ? I like taking photographs of landscapes, villages, flowers, birds, insects.

Hi, if it was me I would take the 5D2. What glass do you have to choose from?
I know a lot of people like a zoom for travel such as the 24-105mm but even though I own some nice quality zooms I am still a prime person. If I had the choice from my lens collection for what you intend to shoot I would take:
Samyang 14mm
Canon 24 f1.4
Canon 40 STM
Canon 100 L Macro or something a bit longer if you need it.
Although I could cover the above pretty much with 2 zooms I would prefer the quality of the primes and I am really enjoying the 40mm for just wandering around with.. I look forward to using it in Italy in a few weeks time.
My views are based on the fact I am not a bird shooter!

Would be good to know what lenses do you have first.

Suggest 5D, I went to Fuerteventura on a surfing holiday a few years ago. Very volcanic awesome for landscapes / panoramics so I would go with the 5D depending on whether you have wide enough glass to do it justice.

Thank you for tour answers.
You own those lenses and you ask, which one you should take with you?
You should know what you are shooting and which lens you prefere.
If I where you I would sell the 7D and all lenses except the 24-105, the 70-200 and the pancake.
I would purchase a 5D III and a 2x extender instead and I guess I would take the 5D III, the 24-105, the 70-200, the extender and the pancake with me on the trip. And of course the 5D II as a backup.

Take the 5D2 and the Pancake. That is all you will need That pancake is so sharp you can crop down for birds and for everything else you are good to go.

From your line up this is what I would take along with the 5D II-
Zeiss 21 mm f2.8 distagon (all landscape)
Zeiss 35 mm f2 (villages, people, statues, automobiles)
Canon 16-35 mm f2.8 (for tight places)
Canon 85 mm f1.8 (for portraits and low light possibilities)
Canon 100-400 mm IS f3.5-5.6 (birds)

To all, thanks for your suggestions. The reason why I’m asking about which lenses to carry to the Canarian island of La Palma is that I have no experience of the place. I know there is an impressive volcano crater (Caldera del Taburiente) that is worth visiting, but I wonder if 24mm is wide enough (is 16-35 necessary ? is Zeiss 21 mm enough ?). I ‘m also aware there are several species of birds on the islands, but don’t know whether they are easy to find and close enough to photograph with a 70-200 mm + 1.4 extender + Canon EOS 5D (7D better beacause of crop factor ?). As I plan to do some walking on the touristic trails of the Caldera and towards Roque de los Muchachos, I don’t want to carry too many, heavy lenses and zooms.

Well I am postponing my trip, but when I go, I shall take my 16-35 mm, 24-105 mm, 100-400 mm. Vu the way, even if I buy a 5D3, I shall keep the7D, excellent for wildlife and action.

Well, as the weather in Belgium was so miserable in July, I finally decided to travel earlier than planned. Now I have some experience of La Palma and I can give some advice about which combination of gear and lens to take. A FF format gear is the best choice here for landscape and architecture. It's companions would be the 16-35 mm and 24-105 mm. But I really missed the EOS 7D and the 100-400 mm L when it came to take pictures of whales. I had the 5D2 combined with a 70-200 mm L 2.8 and a 1.4x extender, but the reach was not satisfactory.
