Well guys, I'm keeping the 7D.
But I think I'm going out to buy the Canon S100, is there any reason for me not to?
Yes. The Sony RX100.
If I was going to buy a compact camera right now this would be it. Looks like a lot like an S100 but has a 1-inch sensor and f/1.8 lens....pretty darn appealing if you ask me.

I strongly agree with the Sony RX100 recommendation. The S100 is a great camera and the pictures I got from mine were very nice, but it looks like the RX100 will deliver significantly better IQ and resolution. All that comes at a significantly higher price though. The price is worth what the camera is able to do, in my opinion, and it will likely be a camera that I take everywhere.

On specs alone the Sony RX100 looks killer...big wow factor, bigger sensor and it's an Exmor, an f1.8 CZ lens...is it worth $300/400 for the IQ, I'd say yes if that's critical for you and within your budget! It's got good macro, close-up also, focuses to just under 2" from the sensor...the G1X can't even come close

The G1X does just fine for close-ups with a Canon 250D close-up filter, but that adds a $100 to the cost and they are hard to find. I love mine, the files post process just like 7D files but I think the noise is a bit less on my G1X compared to my 7D.

Never liked using the 250 or 500D, in a pinch they'll do, but IMO Canon crippled an otherwise great effort in the G1X...but that's just my opinion; a G12 is fine for me for now

Agree, its much more of a pain although the bayonet adaptor helps. Its also a pain to have to use macro mode so often even without the adaptor. I suspect that the close focus aspect was sacrificed to keep the lens as small as it is for the nearly APS C sized sensor. I upgraded from a G10 and the IQ improvement is definitely worth it but I'll certainly miss some aspects of the G10. Upgrading from a previous G, the camera's responsiveness is just the same and I'm used to the handling, but you'd think that with Digic 5 it would be quicker, especially considering the speced responsiveness of some of the smaller sensored cameras its being compared with.
Edit: I'll add that I understand that the G1X is a hard camera for folks to get their head around. For a P&S its big, heavy and extremely expensive. As a small system camera, it doesn't have interchangeable lenses which many require. As a general purpose camera its kind of slow. I'm primarily a DSLR user and I've always had a G that I use for 3 specific purposes: 1) backpacking where 10 lbs of DSLR is too much, 2) with an underwater housing, and 3) as a convenient 2nd body when I have a wide, macro, or telephoto on my main camera. I liked my G10 for that purpose, but would never use it above 200 ISO. When the G1X came along offering 7D image quality, I jumped even paying early adopter premium prices. I haven't been disappointed. I now use ISO 1600 without a 2nd thought. I can use this camera in so many more situations than my G10 and not feel like I'm sacrificing IQ other than say, comparing a 7D to a 5D.
That's why I thought it might be an excellent solution for Akin_t who is already a 7D user. Considering the cost of L glass or a 5D3 or even a 15-85 lens this camera is relatively cheap. Considering a 7D + 15-85 this camera is small and light. It certainly can't replace a 7D, then neither can a small system camera. But as a supplement for those times when you just find it harder to take your 7D with you ...

Basically, when I travel or go out, I want to have a good time instead of babysitting and hauling my gear.
I'm going to Carmel Valley with my gf in 2 weeks and although I want to take my DSLR with me for some nice landscapes, I just don't want to deal with the hassle of the bulk of it (carrying it with me on the plane, bringing it for snapshots in the park etc).
I'm really thinking of a smaller system but I am on a strict budget.
Basically I don't shoot much anymore and was even thinking of trading the 7D in for something smaller, but I can't bring myself to do it....Show more →
Smaller is Rebel, otherwise .. this is SLR forum and smaller cameras are on another one We are all suffering from gear size but you should know for yourself what is better.

this was a huge issue for me on my upcoming trip to Disney. I did not want to baby site DSLR gear. So, I decided to buy an Olympus TG-1, absolutely love it! I can take it anywhere and not have to worry. shooting the kids in the pool has been much fun!

I bought a Think Tank Digital Holster 20 (http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/digital-holster-20-v2.aspx). If I extend it it will even fit my 30D with 100-400 lens without the hood (I loop the shoulder strap through the detached hood in this case). It's light and easy to carry over the shoulder or hooked to another bag. Makes bringing my 30D on trips so easy that I have no excuse to leave it behind.
+1 on the ThinkTankPhoto Digital Holster! I use this all the time with a 5DMKII and 50L for a light setup. It would be a dream with a 7D and light zoom lens.

The last time I went to Walt Disney World with my brother, I went a day early and spent the whole time with camera, tripod, several lenses, etc. Mostly I hung out at Animal Kingdom, but I also did some shooting at Epcot, the Magic Kingdom, and on the boats and monorails between kingdoms.
Then when my brother arrived I left the photo gear in my room and enjoyed my time with him. We had the park's photographers do a couple of shots of us together (I didn't think they were very good photographs), but pictures were far down on the list of things to do together. On our last day (at the Disney Studios) I took the camera again along with one lens to get some pictures of him for his photo album.

Lol, I already ordered an S100 the other day, but I'm glad I did. The RX100 doesn't come out till August, I'm leaving this Friday
It's also quite expensive! But thanks for the heads up!
