Ah, thank you - I hadn't heard that. Do you have a link anywhere?
No, sorry - it wasn't an official line from the people behind Magic Lantern, just a comment on a forum somewhere. The point was made that en existing EOS (7D?) still couldn't benefit from Magic Lantern because even though it used Digic IV, it has a pair of them. No idea whether it was an accurate POV.
Based on that comment, I think there may not be an immediate issue with the T4i and ML.
The 7D uses two Digic processors, a master and a slave. I read a little on the ML Wiki. They are having trouble figuring out the API calls between the Master and Slave controller.
The T4i uses the Digic 5. It must have some new function calls to support face recognition and teh other new features. But it is still only a single processor, so the existing functionality/architecture in ML should still function with some smaller updates
We will see how long it takes. I'll try to contact them later in the week when I have a little more time to see what they think (I think my wife is tired of me spending all my time playing with the new camera ...)
I would guess that it depends on how different the Digic5 processor is. If it's effectively just a D4 with some extra operations, then perhaps support could be added quite quickly. If it's a completely new architecture (vs. Digic4) then it could be closer to starting from scratch for all I know. One comment (maybe in the same posting, I really don't recall) implied that porting from Digic4 to Digic5 might be no easier than porting to (say) a Nikon processor.
Okay... while the T4i is an impressive camera, it's not for me.
Image quality is very nice, features strong, and I really like the touch screen interface. But in the end, it's uncomfortable in my hand. I would have rather Canon designed the Rebel series wider to avoid the thickness.
This camera is to be used when I don't need to carry my 1DMKIII. I've got a Panasonic GX1 that fits that role nicely but I was hoping the T4i would slide into the role and have access to all my Canon glass.
Video focusing wasn't that impressive but I don't have any of the new glass that is supposed to be optimized for video. I'm not saying the T4i is a bad choice, just not the one for me. It wasn't an issue of quality or features but rather size.
You might be happier with the 70D or 7D2 or even the new MILC. I know for sure that I will not be buying anything before they are all released. I know I'll have to wait a few months but that's O.K. My 7D still works as well as before.
