yeah, it definitely has to do with the HTP "feature". I mean, I am going to do more testing. But it seems pretty obvious.
Yes, without enabling HTP you rarely if ever see banding.
Unless you are mttran, in which case Canon cameras are unusable.
Sneakyracer: you may be able to further improve the noise signature in these shots (prior to NR) with some adjustments to LR's sharpening defaults. I've found over the years that different Canon models tend to respond differently to the default sharpening settings ACR. Many models benefit from adding some masking (between 25 and 50 often works well). Turning down the radius a bit and dialing up the strength a little can also give sharp results without over-emphasizing the grain. My defaults for the 7D and 1D IV are a bit different than for the 5D2, for example.
I have yet to use the 5D3, so I don't have any specific suggestions, just that it might be worth playing around with the settings to see if you can optimize the noise.

Not many "highlights" in Seattle today, I'm afraid!
Gary, you seem to forget i am still shooting canon and i want canon to implement the FTP hardware feature instead of firmware feature just like they are doing now...it's a piece of bubu since it's doing nothing but harm the shots
by the way, i've used to live in Seattle...part of UW and Boeing for 30 some years ago. Lately, i am thinking to move back there...missing it alot.

I'm just funnin' with ya.
Seattle is great, but the last few years the weather has been... challenging. However, I think we've probably had more sunshine this spring than we had all last summer...

I am not too crazy about Seattle weather but people is so awesome up there so does the air quality. I truely miss it
I am currently reading your article in 2020. Probably you cannot imagine this. But the fact is already 8 years after the article's version. In terms of quality, I really look forward to your RAW files on these two machines.
And I will update you on price this year. $ 1350 for 1Ds Mark III and $ 2660 for 5D Mark III, almost double.
In normal lighting, I would choose the 1Ds Mark III, if I needed more technology I would choose the 5D Mark III. The fact is that at that time you did not give up 1Ds Mark III right? : D
Please give me the RAW File of these 2 devices for comparison.
