I might keep my OM-D for a long, long while. I very nearly kept my E-P1 for the same reason...it's just got a classic look. Oh...useful for photography too.

Hmm, I might fire up my Canon G3 this weekend. Looking back at it, with the self-timer, it was capable of good stuff.

Maybe I'll E-Bay it...where it will linger until...

The 1Ds is not a collectible, it's my main DSLR. The D30 classic, however, is sure to appreciate to lofty levels one day: mine is in "museum" condition.

I think a "collection" of digital cameras would certainly be interesting in terms of showing the evolution of the design and features. Its something I could see in a museum or similar but, is it the type of thing most people would want to collect ?

The evolution of the Japanese sedan from the early 80's honda's to various generations of Civic's and Accords certainly shows interesting changes in terms of design and consumer taste. Be a cool thing to see in a Honda dealer showroom for example if they had 10 or so cars spanning 25 years.

That said, how many car enthusiast would want to have a garage with a 1988 Honda Accord DX coupe and a 93 Civic EX sedan etc ?? They are surely cheap these days, and I'm sure some are in great shape, but who really wants them ??

Rather it seems car lovers want either cars with unique style or beautiful designs. 1965 GTO, Shelly Cobra, 1930's pickup trucks etc

Same way as my own camera collection includes either things of beauty like a nice wooden 8x10, a GX612, Old Kodak A1's, 50's era Bakelite bodies in all kinds of crazy shapes, rangefinders, minox's, etc. Things are are rather unique and cool to look at.

I just can't see many modern camera's really falling into that classification. I love my D3s but as a camera, not something that looks cool on my shelf. Even cameras that are "good looking", such as my X100, 1) seem to expensive to just put on a shelf. If I'm not using it I'd rather get $900 for it, and 2) are merely poor copies of early models.

What would you want on the bookshelf ? A real Olympus OM or a OM-D (purely from a display standpoint) ? A M3 or a M8.2 ? A real PEN or a EPL2 ??

Just can't see any modern camera's becoming collectables any more than decades of other black, typically plastic Japanese consumer electronics

Anyone collect VCR's

How about a collection of cordless landline telephones ?

Anyone got a roomful of standard and mini cassette answering machines on display ?

How about a nice cabinet full of early flip phones from the likes of Motorola ?

Garage sale CRT monitors or 19" Magnavox televisions something you can't help but pickup just to spice up the decor ??

Just seems that if its too recent, its not cool or interesting. I don't know anyone who wants old standard sized cassette players or mid 80's consumer "hi fi" equipment. HOWEVER, I do know a couple people who got old 1" cassette reel to reel style tape recorders that they have on a display shelf.

They look pretty cool with the big reels. Likewise I've got old 8 and 16mm video recorders. Really old stuff that was powered by winding them up. I'd actually love to get an old "gun camera" from a WWII fighter plane for what its worth as well

So really old movie cameras = cool, worth buying. 1994 Panasonic VHS video recorder, with box, and clip on video light ? Not cool, boring, trash.

I just thinks cameras are going to go the same way, but sure would kick myself if a Canon 1D is worth $5000 on Ebay in 10 years when I sold mine for $400 years ago

No, they are disposable.
