p.2 #1 · Best Cell Phone for Photos?

Fly, the cameras are getting quite good, something like midrange P&S cameras.

Bif, there are reviews all over the place with the same conclusions, but here is one:

http://www.jrin.net/2011_11_01/iphone-4s-vs-samsung-galaxy-s2-camera-comparison

I am not aware of another non-iPhone with a better camera than the Galaxy S2, but if there is one, please let me know.

I dunno what conclusions he came to from those images cuz I only read "iPhone 4S will always be on the left, Samsung Galaxy S2 on the right" but the Galaxy S2 is clearly snuffing the iPhone in every shot. The Galaxies video is also VASTLY superior but the iPhone has a built-in stabilization routine and handles panning motion better. If I use a stabilizer plug-in in something like eyeon's fusion there would probably be no contest at all.

So if he or you are concluding that the iPhone is better from those samples then it only reassures me that the RDF is strong.

The N8 as well as the 808 also snuff the iPhone in terms of still IQ. So there's three. I guess I could come up with another ten or twelve if you'd like.

The 4S looks way better but it might just be due to software because from those test shots, the white balance and metering are obviously superior on the 4S.

Bif, you really need to go back and look at those shots again. The S2 has a pink spot in the middle of half the photos, the sharpness isn't good and the noise is much worse. Are you wearing the wrong glasses? How can we even be having this conversation?

Hehehe... yup... RDF.

Here's the video without the RDF labels:

Which half is generally better?

That's right, the right side! Yet he says the iPhone (left) doesn't have washed out colors and does have much less flare - in comparison. Err, maybe he doesn't know what flare is?

Then he falsely critiques each of the images in reverse of how my eyes see them. And I'm sure my eyes actually work unlike his - which seem to be fogged by RDF glasses. Here's just one of the examples - (direct crops saved with JPeg compression 12):

Now guess which side is the IPhone4s... Yep, it's the soft looking crappy right side. Yet he says the IPhone4S image is clearer. Huh? I call RDF times 10. I did see one image with a hot spot in the center but I dunno what that's about. A flare maybe? <shrug> . Noise levels seem to be about the same - very close anyway. Neither one of these cellphone cameras are very good IMO. The 808 kicks both their asses as does the N8 I think too.

I think many of the Sony-Ericsson cell phones are better than those. They where superior already a few years ago. Today the iPhone or Galaxy are better but still not like the Sony-Ericsson or Sony as they are named today.
They also have had things like IS, point at the screen focus/shooting, pano in the phones for a couple of years time. And had 12MP cameras already 3-4 years ago.
Many people also wrote/said the older iPhone where the best and it was terrible compared to the best Andriod phones

So do the downsampling in PS or whatever...

Also just to mention... Tha iPhone is only the most popular. I dunno what's available in the US but in Japan there's a whole buttload of cellphones with much better cameras in them. I think the iPhone benefits from the same RDF (Reality Distortion Field) effect that some of Apple's other products do. People only think it's "the best" when actually it's far from it.

+1

Yeah my kid has a 3 year old Sony-Ericson with 12mpx. I've never compared it to anything but I mostly like the photos it takes.

Bif, it looks like I have to look a little deeper. I must have clicked one time too few or something, and their downsizing sucks. I am not sure if what you pull out of a movie is reliable though. It would depend too highly on which frame you got... I did see another test by a reputable outfit which went through some deep testing and had the same conclusions as this guy, but I can't find it for pure noise right now.

I am sure that there could be other phones with better cameras than the iPhone 4S (or Galaxy S2), but I have not seen anything to back it up yet, just a couple of guys sitting around, patting each other on the back and saying "yup, yup, there sure are better cellphone cameras than the iPhone 4S out there, yup, yup" Get cracking, get proof!

But we haven't seen anything that back up what you are claiming either

For me it doesn't matter much what quality the cell phone photos have. It's just for fun and usually i delete them after a short time. And i also think the iPhone today is what all iPhones have been before. Good software and bad hardware compared to the best Android phones

Great discourse, the reason I'm asking is because my old Sony Ericsson took some outstanding pictures (could be RDF) haha and I want to keep my options open. I would really like the new Nokia's but I'm kind of sick of using symbian :/

Nokia and Microsoft have made a partnership and all the new Nokia smartphones will be Windows-based, but for some odd reason, the 41MP phone is Symbian-based.

perhaps its the "Carl Zeiss Tessar T*" label on these cams that is alluring me.

Supposedly Nokias WP8 phones debuting this Fall should have the Pure View setup (software and hardware).

I use a WP7 phone and really like it, the UI is made so its easy to get to the stuff you want and shows little notifications on the tiles so you don't have to enter them to get updates. Like my Facebook tile will show how many updates there are and my email tile will show, as a number, how many new emails there are etc. Facebook is integrated into the UI and messaging system.

The camera on my HTC HD7 leaves everything to be desired though. Awful, awful software (over sharpening) and optics.

hehe... Well here comes the uncomfortable (comfortable for me tho) truth: Even tho I commented in this thread I just don't care - like, at all. I use a cellphone about once a week - when it rings - and there's a girl on the other end talking to me. It's a phone. Sure it has a 4mpx camera, sure it has a GPS Map, sure it has a notpad, calendar, and even a pullout QWERTY keyboard. But I just don't care! It's a phone! I do realize that I'm completely outnumbered but I just don't care... especially when I consider who I'm outnumbered by:
