In-camera metering was once a pipe dream. So was ISO 1600. For that matter, so were cameras.
Any technology needs to mature. It is only reasonable to judge its applicability at the current level of evolution, but one should keep in mind that each new generation gets better and that things we'd once thought unthinkable are now very serious indeed.
completely agree, as I used to meter with a handheld meter in the old days... and now love
how accurate matrix metering has gotten, even more so with the D800 and D4.

No, Daniela did not feel well at all so we scrapped the mission in favor of a little sleep and a hot bath. We're regrouping for today, with the kids in tow, hoping the weather will neither force a cancellation of the match nor exceed the family's fortitude.
Looks like your outing on Friday was perfectly planned.

Great expamples. Still on the waiting list for mine. Question, how did you fair with the D800 buffer shooting this event. Did it slow down your shooting any? That seems to be my concern with filling up the buffer and slowing down shooting until it finishes writing the hugh files.

Wow, that definitely doesn't look like it's shot by a 35mm dslr, more like digital medium format. Of course the Nikkor 400mm 2.8 VR lens helped a bit (I am itching to get one ). Great images and thanks for sharing!

Rodolpho,
Hey how are you? I totally agree on the evolution of cameras/technology. I just dont know
ANYBODY using face recognition in fast paced sports and have tried it with the D800 and was unsuccessful.
I wasn't trying to be pompous just taken by surprise that somebody would think of using
face recognition technology at this point in camera technology.
Ciao

Thang,
that is what has surprised me the most. The AF tracking is unbelievable. The only out of focus shots were due to operator error. Put it this way, I can go shoot fast action and not worry about if I missed the shot or not. (at least not the camera's fault)

that's great to know Michael! Looking forward to more images from you with this camera!

No worries, I fully realize that "pompous" would not have been your style. I was responding seriously, in that I think there's general agreement that face detection was not a viable technology for fast-action shooting before now. And it still may not be viable... but there's a chance that it might; and if it's not viable yet, it may (most likely will) become viable later.
My other point was that the D4/D800 are TTBOMK the first cameras with which one might seriously at least attempt the experiment. I don't know of any prior Nikon, Canon, or other pro camera which really gave you the option even to try... so I'm going to do exactly that: try. I have no idea of how well it will work, but I do want to find out.

Great pictures. Can you give us any estimates of your distance to the subject and aperture used? It seems like your DOF is perfect and I'd like to calculate how much DOF there was.
