If I had 1D3, I would definitely not want to shoot 40D or 1D2n. I might want to keep a 7D for extra crop factor...
I would likely only use one FF camera, probably would keep 5D2 for dust buster.
And voila, what do I have? 5D2, 7D, and just bought a 1D3 (will sell the 1D2n).
I probably should sell either 7D or 5D2, but they serve such different purposes in my kit that I can't decide. I shoot 7D quite a lot for wildlife, but covet the best 5D2 images I've taken. So not sure whether to hoard or sell yet...

hoping to not talk about tracking anymore, i edited the opening post.
Hey for it's time the 2n was the bomb.
I know a few sports togs that still swear by them. My friend shoots a pair and loves them. Only time he goes for his "newer" bodies is for higher res or when he needs higher iso.

With all the "what camera should I get" topics, many legacy camera bodies are praised for specific reasons. Sometimes I just feel like getting all of them, just for the hell of it. Just for having. I won't do that, of course. But it's just the thought.
Am I the only one?
Probably not.....many of us like to collect objects of our fascination.
Fortunately for my wallet, I am relatively immune to the call of electronic gadgetry wherein dSLR could also fit.
I am still using 1DMkIIN and 1DsMkII for 99% of my photography.
For times when I'd like to go light, there is also 40D as well as 7D in my bag.
To me that is ample, and I have no desire to acquire any other/newer existing camera bodies.
Now, I will probably be very tempted by 1DX because I am hoping that the camera will have superior AF, responsiveness, speed, resolution and ergonomics, all in my alley. Then, if I have to sink $7,000 on it, at least I will have a pretty clear picture of the tangible benefits my photography will receive from it.

Yes that is what I was aiming for.

I'm willing to bet that you can get more out of your 40D than a lot of people can out of their 1D whatever or 5D wahetevr.
At this time I feel like I have all that my types of photography requires. I almost always have my 5D2 & 24-105 with me. My 1D4 & faster lenses also come with me when I go out to shoot. On rare occasions when I shoot sports a second 1 series body would be nice, but I'm not buying one.
perhaps all lenses though which is what I had expected the topic to have been going by the title
(even then, not all, though, there are simply quite a few I'd just never use, not even on the rarest of occasions)
Wanting to have used them all at some stage is possibly more prevalent than wanting them all now. An excellent digital camera from way back is mostly rubbish by todays standards regardless of whether or not it still works as well as it did when new.
Wanting them all is the credo of any self-respecting gear junkie but to some extent trying them all first hand is the only way to know for sure what is good or bad about how each one works. Whether you go on to keep them all is another matter.
Besides, it might still be cheaper than drinking and smoking
Ralph -- Great topic and salute to some great image makers!
As a thrifty "retro" photographer, I've currently got three of the models on your list: 1D2 (2), 5D and 1Ds2.
Sadly, with the 1D2 now obsoleted by Canon for service (does it still qualify for CPS membership?), I'll be selling one of mine, and giving the heave-ho to the 5D in the near future, both toward the purchase of a 5D3 (I hope) (and if the prices come down to $3000).
I love these older cameras, but my collection is for bodies I am using, not strictly admiring.
Someone asked what use the 1D2 was, and I have to say it is great when high quality, but not high MP, are needed. I use mine for quite a few things really (ebay products, for one), and the imaging (color, etc) is really satisfying. I like having a 1.3X crop around too.
Moving ahead, and may someday pick up a 1D3 to replace the 1D2's.
