Interesting. The Minolta's objectively the better lens, but I can see where the wonderful things about the PORST (bokeh, overall pallet) would be highly desirable. And while I'm sure the total lack of sharpness wouldn't appeal to me in a large print, at web-size, I like the overall rendering of the PORST shot more. Actually, I think if you layered in the sharper bike from the Minolta shot onto the PORST shot and corrected the neon-green fringing in the highlights, it'd be perfect.
Contrast contributes to how we perceive sharpness, as do image size and viewing distance, but increased contrast doesn't change actual sharpness for the area within focus. In fact, simply increasing contrast would likely make the fact that bike isn't sharp even more evident at the same size and typical viewing distance.
@biconvex: it is Nr. 016753. In fact the glass looks a bit dusty. If you have a more crisp version i should think about a cleaning of that lens, but i do not expect a strong improve since the lens looks quite OK to me.
... below a stitch of 8 pictures of MC rokkor PG 58mm 1.2 @ 1.2 (my most loved lens ...),
.. transferred to iPAD2 and directly stitched with a panorama software "autostitch". The 58mm rokkor has so low distortion, that direct stitching works fine

So I want to get one of these for my forthcoming NEX-7.
Which is the cheapest and/or easiest to get ahold of?
Also is there a notable difference between the FD 55 SSC and 55 FL?
the canon FL 55/1.2 tends to be the cheapest in the states. as near as i have been able to find, the only optical difference between it and the FD 55 SSC is the coatings.
LeadyG, after transferring to iPad 2, we're u able to upload to ths forum from your iPad2. Sorry to be a bit off topic but when I try to do same, I find that my upload button is grayed out Thank u joanlvh

There are two versions of this lens. The first one has the serial # on the front ring and a min aperture of f/22, the second one has the serial number at the bottom of the aperture ring and a min aperture of f/16 (There was also another version sold as 'Color Reflex MC' without the 'Porst' designation on the front ring, but this one seems to be the same as version two).
The Porst lens (made by Cosina, also sold as Cosinon 55/1.2 with a slightly differerent focus grip) was introduced at the end of the 70s, and since the version 2 has some similarities in appearance to the Cosina 55mm/1.2 (also sold als Revuenon, Ricoh and Vivitar 55/1.2 with slight changes in outer appearance; not the same lens as the Cosinon) that afaik was introduced in the beginning of the 90s, I suppose that version 2 is the younger one.
I have seen a lot of pictures from version 1 Porsts that show excessive glow wide open. I have never owned a version 1 so I was not able to make a direct comparsion until today but I have two version 2 lenses and I was never able to recreate that glow. In fact, my Porsts showed less glow wide open than the highly regarded Pentax SMC 50/1.2 and SMC-A 50/1.2 that I once tested them against (their border/corner performance was much worse though and they did not get as sharp as the Pentaxes stopped down).
From your serial #, I take it that yours is a version 1? I have only seen 0xxxxx serials on version 1 Porsts so far.
I know, I should close down the aperture few stops to make more part of the plastic flower in focus ... but I just wanna share the lens rendering at f1.2 ... as the thread title said
cool, it looks like it's in motion.
i was amused to read this on luminous landscape recently.
