NO. The advisory has to do with REAL problems with the camera - such as the 200 & 800 IS problem, or the lockup problem, or constant CF card writing problem.

Seriously, this is the dumbest complaint I have ever seen.

Actually, you are incorrect. Canon has posted an advisory on this very issue. Link below. HD Cam Team has been right all along. Now, that being said, I still think the issue is kind of ridiculous. Canon says they will advise on "countermeasures." Seems fairly obvious the countermeasure is to just not take the picture until the LCD light goes off!

Separately, I would think this could be addressed via firmware - e.g. couldn't the camera be able to identify the exposure change under this situation and just override it to the original value?

yes, I saw the advisory. No doubt canon is reacting to the ridiculous web BS, and will offer a piece of black tape inside for those that are crying. More importantly, they will update the firmware to fix the real problems

Yeah, I'm inclined to ignore any actual recall if that ends up being the case. The downside to that is that you will invariably hurt your resale value because you just know any prospective buyers will be asking for a discount if it hasn't been fixed, no matter how unlikely the issue occurring is.

I've had no issues with "light leak". The only thing I have been having a problem with is ISO banding in shadows and some soft images probably due to back focusing.

It sucks because there is no way I'd send mine in just for this non-issue. But now it will have to if you want to resell it for a normal price. This is ridiculous on Canon's part, I can't believe they bowed to a handful of people making something out of nothing. Really peeved at all of this.

The only real problem I'm having with my new 5D3 in not enough time to use this marvelous piece of technology. Canon cannot fix that....retirement might

I'm no engineer and thus I may be foolhardy to say this but I am hopeful it will be a firmware only fix. I just don't understand how the camera couldn't detect the LCD light being pressed then detect a change in exposure immediately subsequent to that event which is then overridden by the camera's computer. Seems doable to me.

Thanks for your comment ghozer.

It seems some people, even after thousands of posts, like to be "rude".

The issues mentioned by timbop will be fixed via firmware update very soon. So no worries.

As far as I know Canon is already aware of the IS lenses issue. Although I don't know if they're aware about CF card problems. Why don't reporting it and contacting Canon to get a solution? Make a video showing the issue, upload it, and I'll support spreading it. We all want cameras that work properly.

The LCD light leak issue is a small issue, but very difficult to fix via firmware since it's an issue in the hardware design, that's why Canon published the product advisory. They don't usually post about issues that can be fixed via firmware, they simply release the update when is ready.

Even being small, in certain situations this issue can affect the normal behavior of the camera, so Canon had to inform their customers. It's not normal and not expected by anybody that the metering system shifts when you press a button to illuminate a LCD panel in certain conditions.

It's surprising some people's attitude. It's immature and unprofessional behavior to speak to someone in bad way or call as "troll" just because he/she is giving information and reporting an issue that (in this case) it's not important for them.

For those not interested in this topic, they can simply skip it. Nobody forces them to read it, but speaking rudely to others is not the right way.

There are users concerned by this "small issue", so it's good that Canon has officially spoken about it. Let's see what Canon does now.

And let's try to be more friendly please

Regards

I don't know HD Cam Team. I still think they could do a fix through firmware where the camera could detect the LCD light button was pushed then engage the AE lock. That wouldn't fix the problem when, say, a flashlight is shined on the LCD but it would be sufficient for most users I'd think and it should avoid a mass recall.

I think Canon should just issue an insert for the existing manuals and change future manuals to include something like:

Note: Exposure metering will not be accurate if the top LCD dispaly is illuminated during metering, pictures are taken with the lens cap on or if flashlights or lasers are directed at the lens, viewfinder or top LCD display during metering...

Firmware fix AND that would be perfect and sufficient in my mind.

Yes, that could be a possible workaround.

The fact that Canon has published a Product Advisory with the words "countermeasures" leads me to think the "fix" via firmware is not very likely to happen.

I don't think it's possible, unless as you said, the camera locks AE when you press LCD light button, which is not a bad idea at all. Although it's not an elegant solution for a $3,500 just released new camera and Canon's history, and wouldn't fix the issue when illuminating with a flashlight in dim light.

They might prefer to repair just right now when there are relatively small amount of cameras out there, or maybe not and implement some kind of workaround like you said.

All of this assuming there is no light leak affecting the metering under a very bright light like when shooting in sunlight (I think there is so small leak compared to the light getting into the system that it won't affect it) which in such case the only option would be a real fix.

Since they didn't mention in the product advisory I think it doesn't happen in real world shooting (but it does happen with lens cap on: sunlight leaks through the LCD, as shown in one of the videos. That clearly demonstrates there's a build/design problem).

Let's wait and hopefully we'll know soon.

Now before anyone gets outraged about this inaccuracy in metering remember that the camera is only capable of exposing in third stop increments

I think you will find that in Av it is stepless. You have to know where to look in the raw file to tell.

Even these figures are worst case scenario as they apply to metering at the lowest end of the meter's sensitivity, where you should probably still be using manual exposure

How do you make this leap? What is its relevance anyway? Av is what I would use and have used on the original 5D - only down to EV 1 though. And yes I used the top LCD exclusively, for example to take versions at different ISO settings. I was at the time holding a conversation while waiting for the composition to come right, and saw no need to crouch down the whole time peering through the finder (which of course my hand was over).
