Here are a few test shots I took Saturday evening when I was outside playing with my boys. It was 7:47pm. The boys were running towards me while wrestling each other, and I was running backwards. The lens was the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II. AF on and set at One Shot and not Al Servo. Picture style setting was Landscape. Manual mode was used. No flash in place. I know these are slightly over exposed but I wanted to test the higher ISO and AF. These have not been edited at all but to reduce the image size.
These shots would have been difficulty for the 50D to capture as quick due to the slower AF and the poor iso performance. Now don't get me wrong the 50D has a nice AF, and it was rated better than the AF on the 5D mark II in head to head comparisons. The 50D still has no chance against the 5D mark III.

You may want to try using Servo on shots like these.
Michael, you can program the depth of field button to switch to the Al Servo mode instantly while you shoot in a single mode. Just push it with you right hand ring finger if you need it and you switch back to the single shot mode if you remove your finger from that button. Give it a try, it works well, at least for me.

As shown on youtube
I find it a bit difficult to reach the button (I have longer nails on my rt hand for guitar) but it does work. Well thought out option, just have to get used to it.
