I came across this juvenile green heron a little while back while he was hunting at the edge of a slough in Redwood Shores, CA. I sat down by the water and waited while he started working his way toward me. Sometimes the best way to stalk birds is just sitting on your butt!

Thanks! Yes - that is the closest I've been to a greenie. I was probably the combo of it being a juvenile and me not moving for so long - it seemed completely unconcerned about me!

Thanks Scott. I probably sat there waiting about 15 minutes just for his crest to pop up - the whole while the sun was setting behind me. Finally in the last minutes of sunset - there it was. I was thrilled!
Yes - if you're lucky (and patient) enough they come to you. :-) I spent at least an hour with this guy as he slooooowly worked his way toward me. The only real entertainment was watching him spend 5 minutes trying to eat a snake that kept slithering back out of his throat.
